What is the solution to being better than a middle of the road team? |

I assume this is leading me to "make moves" to which id respond its gotta be the right ones or you're perpetually stuck in 9th at which point you might say cant wait forever and I'd probably agree with that.
Only thing im sure of is the jump from middle of the road team to contender doesnt happen through signing the korpisalo's of the off season. Of course I also don't know what else is or will be there. |

If he really wanted him, wouldn't you leave a little more cap available?
I still don't get what Johnson is doing here with Joker still on the team. - Lunaion
I think they'll make it work if Kane is open to signing here, either through trades, waivers, ltir, more term, whatever. It's widely known that TPegs loves Kane, and hearing Biron drop the hint about Adams being game as well makes me think this is happening if Kane is amenable and the team is still in contention in December.
The question in my mind is whether Kane wants a payday or a shot with an established contender |

I can see it (wish I couldn't), but in their current state, 1 year makes the most sense. Multiyear at any kind of cap hit is tough.
Like you said, if it's 1 year, why not pick a contender?

That’s might be true. I get that. But if teams 100% thought showtime was coming back.
He would be signed by now.
Nicklas Backstrom came back from hip surgery. (Same one as kane)
21 points in 39. A -25
Kane gives you that. Are you happy? - Sabretooth9
Good points . .55 ppg smells.
Hopefully post surgery pk88 remains a point per game guy. He would be part of the 3rd highest scoring nhl team from last season too.

Nope, not attempting to lead you anywhere. Just looking for opinions.
This is a difficult part of a team taking the next step.
Trading for a player like Pesce would be a big, positive, impactful step, but as is common with players like him who would even be available, there's complications like needing a big new deal at 30 years old or close to it.
That means diving in on a move that involves risk.
I'm not sure they have the mindset for that. |

the fear is if they slip to 11th or 12th in the east
then what to do with the caseys, jokers and krebs
IMO you can't go backwards and bring these 3 back on multi year deals and keep a good chunk of the okposo, girgens, jost, olofsson, johnson and bush on 1 years again
you have the core of tage, cozens, skinner, tuch, dahlin, power and samuelsson
you need a few top end guys not more of the same ole same ole |

they had about a 20 percent bump in shooting percentage in 2022-23 vs 21-22
assuming the same core can replicate that top 8 shooting percentage is also a risk

Can say the same for most of the league though tbh.
Scoring went up league wide. RNH was an 100 point forward last year in Edmonton and you can find an example or two on every roster in the league.
I do believe the Sabres will regress, but I think it can be a positive thing because they are playing with more structure and not giving up 1000 odd man rushes a game and reducing high danger chances against.
Goal differential always tells the story. Vegas finished 14th in goals scored but they gave up a heck of a lot less goals against.
It’s all about balance |

I believe they would have if he would have waived but i take your point.
I think 89 mentioned it earlier in the summer but they did try for Parayko, who also wasn't willing to waive. That's a pretty risky contract. |

Victor olofson on this roster will produce similar numbers just more goals vs assists |

Let's not get crazy, total goals went from 8160 to 8256. 96 goals spread out over 1312 games equals .073 goals per game. RNH feasted because he plays on a team with Jesus himself.

so each team scored 3 more goals as a team for the entire season, as an average
or the bruins, stars, and preds got to face 6k
either story works for the narrative |

Exactly what they are doing ?
Draft and develop and sign your own and win hockey games and entice players to want to be apart of it.

Within 1 point of the playoffs last season, still no takers.
Do they have to just make the playoffs, and that'll change outside Buffalo player perspective?
Do they have to win a round? Two rounds? |

There is another solution than trying to get tenured veterans in trades that need to waive with the unlikely chances that actually happens, but management isn't going down that road. |

Well I think that works to a point, players also want to see if your willing to make that needed move. |
