Good little read from Drance about the Suter signing and the cap (it's gonna be OK Ruby)

1. The cap math and why signing Suter will make for a competitive training camp

The Canucks have meaningful options and routes to get under the $83.5 million upper limit on opening day even if the best-case scenario transpires and Pearson is cleared to resume his playing career.

Some of those routes involve injury to other roster players, which hopefully can be avoided, although player personnel getting dinged up at training camp and in the preseason is all but inevitable in the NHL. Some of those routes could involve the trade market.

The simplest routes, however, the ones that don’t involve any further injury or a Jason Richardinson-style trade prior to the commencement of the NHL regular season, are sure to amp up the competition at Canucks training camp significantly.

Let’s illustrate what we mean by presenting a quick snapshot of what Vancouver’s roster and cap situation would project to look like when the 23-man opening day roster deadline hits, assuming that Pearson comes off of LTIR and Ilya Mikheyev comes off of injured reserve.

Before we do so, I’d just like to note that this snapshot isn’t designed to be a realistic opening-day roster, and that for the most part, the bottom end of the lineup is somewhat interchangeable. If you want to plug Noah Juulsen in for Sheldon Dries, or Guillaume Brisebois in for Matt Irwin, that’s fine, but don’t get caught up in those details since they don’t fundamentally alter the cap math we’re seeking to illustrate.

In the following image, built on CapFriendly.com, we’ve re-assigned Jack Studnicka and Jack Rathbone — both of whom will require waivers — below the line. All of Vancouver’s other one-way contracts remain on the roster, in addition to two-way contracts for Irwin, Phil Di Giuseppe, Sheldon Dries and Vasili Podkolzin’s entry-level deal.

This sample 23-man roster comes in at $1.02 million in face value cap space above the $83.5 million upper limit once the club’s bonus overage penalties and Oliver Ekman-Larsson’s bought-out cap hit are factored in:

That $1.02 million number is very interesting because it’s just below the $1.15 million mark. And $1.15 million is the amount of cap relief a team receives when they assign a one-way contract worth more than $1.15 million below the line and into the American Hockey League.

Or, to put it simply, the Canucks can easily be cap compliant with Pearson activated off of LTIR and no further injuries or trades provided that they roll with a 22-man roster and re-assign one player that earns more than $1.02 million to the American League prior to the start of the regular season.

In summary, there are a number of straightforward paths the Canucks can take to get to cap compliance in the wake of the Suter signing, but without question, adding Suter to the roster (and cap sheet) should turn up the competition level at camp appreciably.

The pressure will be on even established players, in addition to young second-contract players on the roster bubble like Nils Höglander, and on Pearson himself if he’s cleared to return, when training camp gets underway in Victoria next month.

Dance does a good job of catering to the not so swift. He has 3 forwards as scratches, with no 7 Th defenseman no goalies and no running total.
I took a quick look at the chart before considering trying to reD his garbage, but as usual, he left out way too much info, so I didn't waste my time trying to get dumber,

Then you're a fucking idiot. If you took the 33 seconds to read, you would see it says this: "Before we do so, I’d just like to note that this snapshot isn’t designed to be a realistic opening-day roster, and that for the most part, the bottom end of the lineup is somewhat interchangeable. Soooo maybe you're not so swift? Especially since ya know, there ARE goalies on the roster?

Honest question, did you spend the <1 minute to read the article? Because your "realistic" CA article and Drance's "unrealistic" article have the same conclusion.

You realize that Vantel said the same thing, around the same time as the most recent signing.

I guess for some, if it is in the Athletic and written by Drance or Dayal, then it is something to be taken seriously, because goddammit, some people pay for that, yet Vantel gives his thoughts out for free.

A lot of people said the same thing around the signing – easy enough to fit into the cap. Some people (namely you) complained about the signing. This is just a fully thought out, rounded out explanation that was a part of a larger article on the Suter signing, the other parts being: breaking down the forward size issue, and his PK metrics/problems in analysis. Worthwhile reads for some of us.

And Vantel gives out a lot of his thoughts for free – some are more worthwhile than the others

I remember him sounding like an entitled twat when he said that. It didn't scream leadership to me, it sounded like he was directing the GM.

I don't hate the Pius signing, but I think I've established my skepticism on this team the last several years ... main concern being depth. No push from developed or even overdeveloped players on the farm, gifting lineup spots (Hogz, Podz) too early and having to bring up guys early overall because of injury.

So hear me out ... if Miller gets injured our 2nd line centre is Suter and third is Blueger. Factor in that Miller isn't even really a centre to begin with, this is just an example of where the house of cards falls pretty easily. If all goes perfect, maybe we're a bubble team. When something bad happens, we're destined for bottomsville pretty quick (of course with the annual late season rally to get out of a good draft position).

Say what you want about Horvat and I don't mind trading him given the situation they put themselves in after signing Miller, but he won a heck of a lot of faceoffs and I think we're going to be chasing the puck around a lot after the draws this year. For as great as Petey is, faceoffs are not.
