Only 2 salaries retention per contracts are allowed.
Pens are paying 25%, Habs are paying 50% of what remains.
You're "stuck" with Petry at 2.3M. Which is a fine deal btw.

I am sure the 15 team no-trade list did not help, and we see why the Pens had to give up a seconds to get rid of him because they could not trade him anywhere at that salary.
Good pick up for the Red Wings, I am sure Petry will do well there for the next few years.
Remember - anything we got for Hoffman was suppose to be a win, Well, so far a 2nd, a 4th, and Lindström (not sure he stick around or goes back to Europe), a prospect and DeSmith.
Yeah, we gave up some cap, but will nto need it for the next few years.
