Hains: In Hainsight: Petry’s Second Stint in Montreal Was a Short one

Less than a week after being involved in the three-way deal that sent Erik Karlsson to Pittsburgh, Kent Hughes flipped one of the pieces he got in the deal.

got rid of Hoffman while acquiring a 2nd and 4th, picked up a 24 y/o RD who may play (or not), a local kid for Laval and a backup goalie. who cares about the 2.3M we pay for Petry?

This.

The roster spots that are now available for young players has it's worth too.

So…in the end, and correct me if I’m wrong.

HuGo did San Jose a favour, Pittsburg a favour, and Petry a favour.

And out of all of that they got rid of Hoffman, got a second round pick, a fringe nhl’er who’s probably heading home, and spent about 6 million in the process.

I hope I’m wrong..

More like they get something (so far a 2nd, a 4th, Lindström , a prospect and DeSmith) for basically nothing (Hoffman, Pitlick and $2.5M cap space), allowing them to open up roster spots for younger players.

Yup. Hughes got involved into something that didn't concern him and created something out of nothing.

Well they are historically one of the worst post-second round drafting teams since 2005.

As a teacher yourself, you know I cannot accept this answer unless you show me your work that led you to this conclusion.

20/30

Can't have my Knights and Kraken there.

Teams worse
AZ, BOS, CGY, CHI, COL, NJ, NYR, PHI, VAN, WPG.

They have either had sustained success since 05, or are losers... and Montreal hasn't had any success, so...

What's the definition of sustained success? Is it based in playoffs rounds won?

Winning on the ice. Playoff rounds won don't really matter because they don't raise banners for that. If you suck on the ice, but brag about being a draft merchant you should be good at drafting.

Because on the list I posted, you can be Boston, Chicago or you can be Arizona, Montreal
