Not sure what Dubas saw in those two, but I really hope one of them has a breakout year. Putting our eggs in the Jarry basket isn't ideal. - burgh4life87
Yea was hoping for a better goalie like a 1b If we were keeping Jarry. |

Ideally the 1st PP should be Karlsson Malkin Crosby Carter Rakell to start. Hopefully Karlson mitigates a lot of the overly creative non sense that Crosby and Malkin like to play with on the man advantage. Removing Guentzel puts one less guy on the ice to partake in the nonsense. Carter can just stay in front of the net, something the Pens haven’t done since Hornqvust departed. His big frame alone in the goalies eyes will be a major help. Rakell is more of a shooter not a tididlywinks tikker takker, that’s why I put him there. Tap in goals will always create themselves on the man advantage but the focus should be pucks to the net. |

Why are some so big on Nylander? - IronCity
Not a clue. He had good fancy stars playing with 2 good players for a few games while not doing poop else. |

I wouldn't say anyone is "big" on him around here... Not that I've seen. |

Yea I can see that, I guess Rakell would move over to the LW. If Geno Smith and Rust are all healthy I want to see them just stick together to start. Don't throw either of them up with Sid. Just give Sid Rakell and whoever until Jake is back. - 668710

Didn't Sully already say he thinks Smith would be a great compliment to Malkin's game? |

Yea but that's basically a no brainer for Sully, he already knows Guentz is with Sid. |

I wanted that 2 years ago when we got Carter. It's to late for that now. |

IDK about big, but feels like quite a few are counting on him. I think it's a fair question about what's the evidence for that hope
Saying this as a DOC supporter, but not really a believer in Nylander which is similar, but I think I've laid out why I'm higher on DOC. |

Well I think they both make the team as currently constructed. It would take one of Poulin, Pustinen, Yager etc...to completely bulldoze the door down for them not to make this team. |

I keep going back to the fact the Pens signed Nylander to his deal without a GM so obviously the coaches had to like something about his game to want him to stay around right? |

I mean a team like us with a low prospect pool, it makes tons of sense. But he's not a bad player either haha. |

We have a bunch of guys like him over the years. Very little NHL level offensive skill, but can play an overall game that typically results in a net positive. Not a bad piece to have at league min. |

I still don't have Nylander as a lock to make it. My locks are Eller, DOC, Nieto, Acciari, and unfortunately Carter. Think there will be a big training camp battle with him, Pitlick, Johansson, Hinostroza, Zohorna, etc for the last spot or two.
I think it's a possibility when Jake is healthy they go 12 forwards. Dubas has not been afraid of that. Plus somebody is probably brought in (hopefully Tatar) close to camp that could take another spot.
Puustinen or Poulin would have to really kick in the door, but Jake's injury probably helps a guy or two make the opening roster that will go down soon as he's healthy. Regardless, depth will be needed. |

Sully also wanted to make sure WBS was stocked with some call up guys too. Nylander has a shot, but don't think he's on the team yet, let alone third or second line. |

Agreed. The locks at forward are sid, geno, jake, rust, rak, smith, eller, acciari, carter, nieto, doc, then there's a bus load of guys competing for 2 spots.
Nylander has an edge since he looked like a fringe NHLer last year in a handful of games and he has a league-min contract, but if he's clearly outplayed by somebody he could easily end up in WB or traded. |

Carter has a NMC so he can't be waived or sent to the minors. He's on the team. |

Carter is a lock as long as he's a Penguin since they can't move him so he gets a roster spot. If Dubas can pull off a miracle and trade him (with his consent) or if he ends up on LTIR, great, but for opening day I'm expecting Carter to be on the roster. |

Not really it's not impossible for them to say send down Pitlick and call up Hinostroza. I just did it on Cap Friendly. We actually are 245,000 under the cap and Carter is the 13th forward. |

13th forward still counts as a lock. He's on the roster of 13 forwards. |
