Then mcds cap that he signed 5 years ago?
Sure.
Doesn't mean he is better, but its all about cap percentage.
Mcds and drysaddles next deals will be interesting.
Would have preferred another year or two but cest la vie. - Fakepartofme
The cap was expected to go up for for McDavid too but with Covid everything slowed down. I think Matthews only taking less than 2 million a year isn’t bad at all considering. These next 5 years are key either way. |

Doesn't feel like much of a hometown discount though does it? Kind of what it should be, but no real bargain compared to McKinnon etc... - Leaffrog
I agree. His contract after this will be a bargain cuz he wants to play with Connor…at hockey… |

Less than what he could have got is a discount.
Anyone who thought he'd take equal pay or a pay cut after what he has done while playing under the current contract was setting themselves up for disappointment.
What do you think he would / could have got on the open market? I'd say even on a 4 year deal the # starts at 14M if it's a team other than Toronto. - Cush29
Never thought he should take a pay cut. That's preposterous. But when you compare the contract to McKinnon's signed just last year after winning the cup and at 15.29% of cap for an 8 year deal, 15.99% of cap for a 4 year deal doesn't feel like he's done the team any favours right?
Could he have asked for more, sure! Could he have gotten more, sure! Is this a home town discount that was intimated earlier this year to help spread around more money for better players to surround him, no...
Not crapping on this deal. I'm glad he's here for the next 5 years, and Matthews will likely go down as the greatest Leaf ever. |

Hagel should have more based on his 64 point season. Willie got more based on his 61 points season (his first contract). But the "non-existent" Florida tax makes this more lucrative for Hagel. |

Good contract for Matthews and for the Leafs.
Cap will go close to $96m next year as escrow clawback comes to an end.
There is enough money to pay Nylander and maintain the existing roster until the Tavares contract concludes and the Leafs get significant cap relief.
Younger up and coming teams (eg., NJ Devils) are locking all their young talent into long term deals ($8m x 8). This poses some difficulty for older teams like Leafs as the bench mark salaries of first line players end up costing $3 to $4m more.
It will impose some limitations on a team's ability to retain quality 3rd line depth players. Maybe not a huge issue in regular season. But, significant for playoffs when depth is so much more important. |

So many people said he only signed for 5 years because he was going to bolt when it was up. Not just our haters but our fans too. |

Calculated risk on his part and its gonna pay off. This is his what second contract extention with the leafs?
McDavid signed 8 years after his ELC. 100M dollars.
AM34:
2019-24 (58 million)
24-28 (53 million)
Not as obvious as McDavids, think he did that on purpose cause people cant maths and have short memory spans. In the end he will give the leafs just the same amount of time as McDavid did the Oilers for 10 million more and LESS overall production and a bit injury prone. |

Post ELC - AM34 will have done 9 years at $111M ...that's 12.35 per year. So a little less than McD and began later (so smaller percentage of cap).
It's exactly where you'd expect him to be.
Also - he's giving up his best years (age 27-30). |

Def for real - is it hard to manage both this account and the Spatso one?

He only signed for five years because he wanted to bleed every cent out of this team he could. Which is also why he re-signed for four years, so he can do it again and swing for the fences for 8 years at age 29-39. Great player, but all about the cashish with this cat, it's pretty clear. |

So because he has won a single cup he deserves more money than McDavid?
I guess old Fatty Patty Maroon should be the highest paid player in the league then right? (yes it was a joke)
McDavid signed in 2018/2019 - that's not eons ago but sure it's not today, but it was a max term deal so he could have asked for more if he wanted to and thought it would be paid to him.
More people will view this as a good deal than a bad one, even if the cap doesn't go up to 100M.
Matthews at 13.25M would be perceived by most as fair value for money this season never mind next when he actually gets the bump in pay. - Cush29
This is hilarious 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆 |
