He only signed for five years because he wanted to bleed every cent out of this team he could. Which is also why he re-signed for four years.

He would have got a hell of a lot more as a UFA next summer at any term he wanted. This deal isn't a discount but it's not a bad one either. It's in the sweet spot.

But the 4 yr term putting him to free agency at 30/31 is probably about the best, and last, chance to get a third big dollar contract.

Stats for stars typically really start to decline at 31/32.

The problem with Capfriendly is they quote the cap% in the signing year rather than the year that the contract begins. It's dumb and confuses people. The league has already announced the Cap's going to be ~ 88M or so next year. Both sides know this when they're negotiating.

13.25 of 88 is about 15%. Right where you'd expect him to be.

Post ELC - AM34 will have done 9 years at $111M ...that's 12.35 per year. So a little less than McD and began later (so smaller percentage of cap).

It's exactly where you'd expect him to be.

Maybe cap goes up and he keeps trucking along and gets 16 million per on his next contract but I think this actually looks good on the leafs side for once.
