Under his current deal he was ranked 4th in Cap-hit and 11th in scoring over the 7 years he's been in the league.
Better hope he actually plays better, or IMO he's not underpaid... - Nasty_Duck
Scored 40 goals with one wrist last season while also being one of the best defensive forwards in hockey.
He's the best all around player in the league. |

I get that you don’t like the leafs but I think you should go after a different player. |

5v5 goals per 60 since Matthews entered the league (5000+ minutes):
1. Matthews 1.61
2. Pastrnak 1.3
3. Ovechkin 1.24
4. Skinner 1.19
5. McDavid 1.16
6. Guentzel 1.1
7. Kucherov 1.1
Matthews could go about a season and a half without a 5v5 goal, and he'd still be in first. |

He only signed for five years because he wanted to bleed every cent out of this team he could. Which is also why he re-signed for four years, so he can do it again and swing for the fences for 8 years at age 29-39. Great player, but all about the cashish with this cat, it's pretty clear. - fifty__missions
It’s not a max term or dollars deal so there is zero accuracy to your statement.
He could have got more than he did for 4 years almost anywhere including Toronto.
That being said if it helps you sleep at night - sure claim he is a money hungry a-hole just trying to shaft the Leafs - It doesn’t make it true though. |

Auston Matthews' new mega-deal for 13.5M makes him the highest-paid NHLer
It would also make him the...
• 113th highest-paid player in the NBA
• 103rd highest-paid player in the MLB
• 88th highest-paid player in the NFL
So basically he's a peasant in the pro sports world.

MLB: $4.9 mill

Lol
If you’re going to talk about his current cap hit bring up the stats under the time he’s been this particular hit.
He’s first in goal scoring over the last 4 years, oh, and third in blocked shots by forwards. There’s a couple things to start fairly looking at. |

Average has nothing to do with a top 3 player in his sport.
Looking at the top 3 in all, is where the comparison tells the tale. That is why he, and the NHL in general, are underpaid. |

I was under the impression that he has scored the most goals in the NHL since entering in 2016. Now, I know he has been unreal in all 3 zones and in the dot as well. For a centre to score like that and play smart reliable, and dependable defence at the same time he’s rippin twine - I’d say he’s underpaid yup.
Seriously though man - explain why a bruins fan comes into a Leafs board to chirp about a signing? After that convince me that you aren’t obsessed with the Buds. |

It’s sport popularity that creates the pay for the stars, and the NHL is the 4th most popular by a notable amount in the USA so the players are simply not worth it because the sport doesn’t make as much profit as the others. |

FFS I'm not chirping or saying anything like it's a bad deal. It's a decent deal for both the team and player.
I just happen to think it's fair so.. he's not underpaid.
Are you fans so insecure that you can't handle a difference of opinion?
As for why I might post here... Leafs are in same division as my team and... have you seen how (little) activity there is in Bruins blogs? |

1. I get the posting in here because your teams thread is boring - but the problem is you are chirping bud. Negative to stir up crap.
2. The problem is nobody wanted your negative opinion as a bruins fan. Why give it if it’s negative. Not insecurity - to me insecurity is watching your team commit the single biggest hero to zero flop in sport, having ONE if the better players your franchise has ever seen retire with a whimper and cone into a leafs thread to chirp the best 2 way centre in the leagues new contract.
3. How do you type what you did (better hope he plays better…) and then try to defend it like it’s not a troll job? As if folks in here can’t go back and read it. You posted saying that a pure scorer is 11th in points and 4th in cap hit - and that’s not trolling?
Don’t look up - you might find your head is stuck. |

Matthews is underpaid
Mcdavid is underpaid
Mack is underpaid
These guys to this point have accepted to be underpaid based on their production. The numbers don’t lie, they contribute more than they are paid.
There’s going to be a player of these guys caliber that says “(frank) it you guys are paying me what I’m worth and I don’t care if it makes us worse” but it wasn’t AM today, and I’m thankful for that.
Maybe it’s Jack Hughes, who knows. But Matthews at that cap hit is a top 5 contract in the league. |

The NHL is less popular by mismanagement. Bettman and the hard cap has made the NHL far less profitable than the NBA which is a reasonable comparison. Please try to explain the contract to Messi with the 4th most popular theory. Popularity is on the league in terms of making the game, the product and league exciting. The hard cap, which doesn't exist in the NBA, MLB or NFL is the fundamental flaw keeping the NHL from growth in popularity. Do you think a team like Arizona Coyotes would exist in the NBA or NFL? They remain in the league on welfare from other teams and absorbing bullpoop contracts from other teams to make the Cap minimum. How does that promote popularity? |

How does his first 7 years in the NHL measure up to the first 7 years for those other guys? His next 5 years are age 26-30 ....probably his best.
Use Cap% of the first year of each deal you're comparing. He and MacKinnon are the same cap %.
And the short term is a total guess as to who it's better for ...Leafs or 34. Not an issue either way.
