I still think the last 16 contract was high so it inflated this next one - but ya given this one and what you mentioned I could see 12-12.5 for Marner & 12.5-12.75 for Drais
- Big23Questions

Way I see it, he was well overpaid and then finally hit the level where he was basically worth it last season. Unless there's a huge jump in his game again, there shouldn't be much, or any, raise in his $$$.

Because as great as he is, he is not Matthews.

depends on the duration, Drais will make more than Matthews by the time he signs (cap going up) and better stats.

Just a heads up that pre-season tickets for the 3 games in Toronto just went on sale this afternoon and are very reasonably priced.

I snagged 5 tickets for the Leafs / Habs on Monday October 2nd for me and 4 friends.

They have tickets as low as $59 plus taxes etc. but even the 100's are $100-$150 a pop which is a deal since last row purples cost that during regular season.

Good deals.

Ya, optimistically MM does the Leaf for Life thing and goes 8 years which might actually lower his AAV b/c it'll pay him through his mid 30's.

And I've put this out there a few times ...his 10.8 included the ELC bonus money he felt duped out of by Lou. Dubas gave it back to him ....about 5M IIRC.

That $5M spread over his 6 year deal is about 800k per year ....so, if true, then his last deal was ~ $10M per.

His hero is Gilmour - 93. I'm going to start the speculation now ....MM goes 8x11.625 next summer ..which totals $93M.

Edit - had to refresh my memory. Dreger reported Leaf's offer included the old ELC "B" bonus that MM felt owed - $1.6 per year for 3 years = 4.8M.

New deal really was ...
10M x 6 =60M
plus the 4.8M
plus 6 x 93k as a shout out to his hero.

So ignoring the pay back he signed for 6 x 10.093 after watching AM sign for 5 x 11.68. I don't think he's as hung up on "equal" as some fans think he is.

So I'm sticking with the 8 x 11.625 prediction.

Matthews got a 12.5% increase in cap.
Thats all marner should get which gives him 12.26m per on his next contract.

As for willie. A 12.5% increase on his 7.5 salary only takes him to just under 8.5m per. So give him a 19% increase to take him to 9.25 and he can stfu.

Easy.

Now hopefully the cap increases by 12% in the next 2 years, we'll be fine. Lol
Only a 6% from last year to 24/25

But JTs next contract will save 40- 50% of his current hit

My prediction for the year is Klingberg becomes the number 1 PP QB.

Watched some video and the guy can walk the blue line very well.

Rielly distributes the puck well he is too stagnant back there.

Will be taking a shot at Klingberg in my fantasy hockey draft this year.

Its only a 1.6M raise...in a cap world that is expected to jump possibly in double digits over his contract.

JTs money coming off the books as well. Leafs cap situation is going to get better not worse with this.

You guys can't see the forest for the trees. It's the four years, following the five years. Why does every other team sign their players in Matthews stratosphere to eight year deals?? This guy gonna bleed every dime he can.

Higher cap hit yet half the years of Nathan McKinnon, and we're supposed to sing and dance?

Ewwwwwwwwww.

One of the guys is a Habs fan actually but that doesn't mean I want 2 bumholes in my ear if the Laval Canadiens beat the Toronto Marlie-Leafs.

The tickets are great prices though so if you are in fact in the GTA it's a great opportunity to see some of the stars, some of the youth on the cheap. The fact it's on a Monday kinda' sucks but it is what it is.

I think the Habs host the Leafs in a pre-season game on a Thursday night which is much better. Working 1 day hung over > working a whole week.

Isn't it generally the case that shorter terms mean higher cap hit?

You'd think so, but it rarely happens.

Orlov this year being an exception, historically players signing longer term contracts also get higher AAV's, though it's hard to know what was offered earlier and if they've taken less money per year for a longer term.

Ya.

Totally.

Forest through the trees.

How much did Gaudreau sign for in Calgary again?

Tavares in NYI?

Panarin in CBJ??

But yeah, leaf fans should be pissed Matthews has committed to the leafs until he’s 31. Every other team gets 8 years. Totally.

Mcdavid got 8 years and if he leaves then Matthews committed another 3 years more than him. Calm down.

Going shorter meant a lower AAV. If you want to start female doging about 2028, knock yourself out.

Arithmetic ...

McD - 100/8 = 12.5M so far.

Matthews - 111M/9 = 12.35M so far.

Mackinnon and Matthews will have almost identical cap % at around 15%.

Tbh I’m guessing the contract length was deliberate by Matthews’ agent. If the leafs look to resign him it will be when he’s 29 before the final year of the contract. He’ll be in the middle of his dominant years and will get a notable raise again. Probably something that gives him something around $15 til he’s in his mid 30s.

Good point - but it depends what years they are giving up.

Best to think of an athletes career as a curve starting low, peaking at 30 and then declining.

So longer term early in their career should increase the AAV. Once you start adding on years in the mid-30's it "should" drop the AAV.

But all of this is probably trumped by the 'you gotta pay a premium to buy premium' factor. At some point the player knows they can go to market and ask for anything.

Look at the NBA. If you're an allstar you get the max regardless of how measure up to other all stars.

It depends on how these big long tickets look when the player is in the last couple years too. Be careful what you wish for when a big ticket takes a player into his mid 30s.

I like the idea of approaching things (as a GM) where the big name guys looking for huge money don’t get 8 years, nobody is worth the risk type thing. Go 4 years at a time and if they’re still worth money ok get another 4. If not sign them for less or move them. The NTCs are a bit of a hiccup to this approach however.
