Ewwwwwwwwww.

One of the guys is a Habs fan actually but that doesn't mean I want 2 bumholes in my ear if the Laval Canadiens beat the Toronto Marlie-Leafs.

The tickets are great prices though so if you are in fact in the GTA it's a great opportunity to see some of the stars, some of the youth on the cheap. The fact it's on a Monday kinda' sucks but it is what it is.

I think the Habs host the Leafs in a pre-season game on a Thursday night which is much better. Working 1 day hung over > working a whole week.

- Cush29

Well I understand you wouldn't want a shift in the group's balance growing to 40% Habs fan.

Love watching the game with fans of the other team though, as long as it's friendly teasing and beers are getting handed over, it's alot of fun.

Happens more often watching the NFL since everyone has a different team they cheer for.

Tbh I’m guessing the contract length was deliberate by Matthews’ agent. If the leafs look to resign him it will be when he’s 29 before the final year of the contract. He’ll be in the middle of his dominant years and will get a notable raise again. Probably something that gives him something around $15 til he’s in his mid 30s.

Friedman said he wanted 3 years and Leafs wanted longer. Matthews is following the NBA model of shorter contracts. Lebron has signed 3, 4, 2, 3, 4 and 2 year deals. You’re going to get more signing repeatedly at higher cap levels. This makes even more sense coming into a period where the cap is expected to grow quickly.

Yup. Matthews has played his hand perfectly so far.

As long as he's not getting a serious injury, it's the best way he can maximize the money he gets.

and I see nothing wrong with that. Dude needs to make his coin and still have some when he 67.

I guess the curiousity will be how long/late in life nhl players can hope to do this.

For instance Matthews will get one higher next time but after that? There’s a gamble I guess.

Kyperios said this, so take it with a big grain of salt ( ), but he said Matthews' camp wanted 3 years and the Leafs wanted 5. So they middle grounded it.

He's barely breaking even according to Chris Pronger.

Ok, so that instantly adds more validity over Kyperios.

Hopefully he goes the Spezza route and take the minimum salary.

Picked a good day to be driving to the GTA and getting to hear some Leafs stuff instead of baseball or Dan Patrick on the radio.

I’m truly curious if he’ll be the type who happily sticks around for less in his 30s

You can tell he has matured because he's not gonna make 13.34 millions this time.

To be fair the NBA limits term to 4/5 years on all contracts.

But agreed, the superstars often go shorter and add an opt out so they can re-up.

Although they also allow for annual escalators connected to the rate the Cap goes up. You sign a max deal for 4 years and the amount adjusts as the Cap increases.

I'm not even sure why most NBA superstars need agents other than for endorsements and legal defense.

He'll be 31 when he plays his first game on his next contract. I'd imagine an 8 year deal paying him through age 38 is what he and his agent have in mind.

$13.25 x 4

13 + 25 - 4

= 34

I’ll be sticking to this for years lol

7/8 no doubt. It's a brilliant plan if he can stay healthy and productive. GM's love giving those insane 7 year deals to 30/32 year olds.

Yup, my point is that his importance to the team when he’s due to resign might be higher and actually gives him a salary higher than he’ll deserve with the next deal.

or he will be forced to retire during this 4yrs contract due to a severe injury and he will have left a lot of money on the table by not securing an 8yrs deal

Money is the same thing for players as it is businessfolk.

There is never enough.
