Sooooo…
If Pegula does sell the Sabres, I can’t imagine any city out there that would provide a new owner with a better financial picture.
Buffalo may be a small market, but you fellas are pretty dedicated to your hockey.
So would it really be so bad for Pegula to sell? |

For all his faults, I don't see Pegula selling to a party with out-of-town interests. He does genuinely love the Sabres so he's not handing it over to a Jim Balsillie type. Gary Bettman is also weirdly in Buffalo’s corner and has been for 20 years so I don't view relocation as a realistic threat.
I don't think Pegula is selling at all, for the record. He's too stubborn and wants to prove he wasn't the problem.
The Pegula show will continue for the foreseeable future. Tune in next month to see which VP got axed for crossing the wrong person |

But my point is I don’t see any buyers lining up with out of town interests.
Is there an untapped market out there that has the potential to generate more revenue than Buffalo?
Not Houston.
Not Kansas City.
Not Salt Lake City.
Not Quebec City.
So unless you want to get into wild conspiracy theories about Bell and Rogers buying it, separating and each owning a Toronto franchise, I can’t see the Sabres relocating. |

Although not a major city. Buffalo is always going to be a better city for hockey than most southern cities and a few of the similar sized Canadian cities (because of burbs and Ontario). If they could put a playoff roster out there that place will be rocking again.
If the nhl put a team in Hamilton I wonder how much it would affect the Sabres? |

Houston could probably support a team
Anchorage could be interesting. I wonder if that could work. You gotta imagine they would eat it up at first at least.
Hamilton could support a team
Cleveland? Kind of doubt it because of Columbus.
I doubt the others you stated. |

There are plenty of larger markets that would be desirable relocation locations and I think they would have a lot of outside interest for that reason. I can't see the Leafs ever giving up their territorial sovereignty to host another franchise in the GTA. It would be litigated into the ground.
But, no, our fate is to endure the meddlesome ownership of Terry Pegula for the next 20 years.
We (the taxpayers) will pay for the massive arena improvements due in the next 5 years and if Terry's timing is right, the team will be good and we'll all happily do so like trained seals clapping for herring. His $170m Harborcenter is a wonderful draw for the combine and the fact that it's connected to the arena makes a new location in Buffalo unlikely |

Terry's undoubtedly smart. He is an engineer, after all. He also doesn't know what the fück he's doing with the Sabres, and he got lucky with the Bills. The two are not mutually exclusive. Would you let an orthopedic surgeon operate on your brain?
Just because you're intelligent doesn't mean you can do everything. Though that doesn't stop one from overpaying for Twitter and promptly losing most of its advertisers and absolutely tanking the value. - Wetbandit1
The ADL pressured advertisers to drop Twitter because Musk is pro-1A(to a point) because the left is obsessed with censorship/banning wrongthink. Aside from that he cut over 6k woke useless morons after he took over, and it has absolutely been a better experience for users.. then he hired a globalist WEF CEO to appease his handlers. |

Dude the travel times would make it completely undoable, Vancouver to Anchorage is 3.5 hours alone, NYC is 8 hours, Miami is 12 hours… the population is only 300k, the entire state is less than 500k, the weather in the winter months would be too dangerous… It absolutely would not work. Even their minor league teams have gone defunct. There just isn’t enough infrastructure or population.
Buffalo currently has the smallest NHL market and it’s at 1.2 million.
Fetch will happen before an Anchorage NHL team. |

I predict if Pegula sells them, they are gone. SEEEEEEEEAH. Man, if you're a fan of the team still living in Buffalo, you get nothing. Zip Zero Nada. Feel bad for the good fans still living there. The rest might want to go to a dark cave and do some self reflecting. Lucky for me, they can relocate and I can still be a fan. No skin off my back. I don't live there anymore so really only go to games when they play in Philly, sometimes Devils anyway. If I did still live there, even a move to Hamilton would crush me. Absolutely devastated like Newman was when the kick in the head from Crazy Joe Davola made Kramer forget his life long dream of becoming a banker on the stand.
Toronto Maple Leafs are among the top most valuable franchises in the NHL. They couldn't GAF if the Sabres move to Hamilton or even to Toronto in my opinion. It won't depreciate their brand at all. It might raise it. The most valuable sports team in the NHL is the Rangers. They share a market with multiple teams. It means nothing when you live in a metropolis. Not like a city that has a smaller population than St. Catherines.
Some on here were saying the arena renovation costs were to establish costs for them to stay put. Totally agree. That can be used to hold city hostage for funding or used for an interested buyer in determining should they stay or should they go. If they stay there will be trouble. If they go it will be double.
I'll go with Hamilton, Quebec City or Toronto in that order.

So you are 100% wrong. MLSE will never allow another franchise in their territory. Under NHL RULES, they have a right to block any relocation within a 100 mile radius.
There is one caveat, though: far-fetched conspiracy theory with no basis on actual facts, but if the Bell-Rogers partnership ever went sour (I have it on good authority that Tannenbaum is required to sell his minority share soon), maybe they come to an agreement where partner A sells their stake in the Leafs to partner B, partner B allows partner A to bring a second franchise to Toronto.
The problem with this theory is the Raptors are now worth more than the Leafs.
I like Buffalo having an NHL franchise. And I’m not worried that Pegula may sell.
But holy frank, I hope he never sells the Bills.

Hence why Basilile couldn’t get a franchise in Hamilton. But it wasn’t Toronto who vetoed, it was Buffalo.
If it’s Buffalo moving to Hamilton, I think it’s quite realistic.
With that being said, I hope they never leave Buffalo. |

I meant in America but yeah the 2nd smallest proving my point though when I talk crap on inferiority complex Buffalo, and still WPG has a market twice the size of Anchorage and hardly supports their team as it is. |

This is a really good post and you’ve been locked in on this for a while. Sabres already exist within that 100 mile radius. Move the Yotes, it’s a problem. Move the Sabres, I don’t think there is anything they can do about it. From a 2009 CTV I read, it comes down to a majority league vote anyway, not permission from MLSE. |

So Bettman won't let the Coyotes leave a city/state where no one wants them but you think the Sabres are moving? He also wouldn't let the Sabres move when the league owned them. |

Andlauer moved the Bulldogs from Hamilton to Brantford so they can renovate the arena, however, last I heard there was nothing in writing suggesting the Bulldogs were ever going back.
Last I heard Brantford was trying to make plans to keep the Bulldogs in Brantford long term, but I can’t say I have spoken to my source in a while.
With Andlauer buying the Sens I know he needs to sell his stake in the Habs but I can’t say I’m familiar with if that would extend to ownership of an OHL team.
Lots of balls up in the air, if I can get more info I’ll share it but that’s all I got |

Do Canadians like Balsillie? Someone fighting that hard for an NHL franchise might be a good owner. |
