Its not just NHL, those same people do Fifa, NBA, MLB, Madden, etc... theyre not limited to just 1 sport. You have to do them all if you want to have a large, successful fanbase that watches your videos. These people also do 1st/3rd person shooter games and etc...

Yeah, I mean some people, and I guess a large enough amount, are always willing to shell out money for something, but if i'm a dev, I would do the same. I mean if people are dumb enough to pay.......
