Friedman: Leafs had some discussions on possible trades for Nylander but didn’t like what was proposed as coming back.
- Canada Cup

Interesting revelation that the Leafs have had active trade discussions for Willie.

Good to know the leafs have discussed the possibility of moving willie if need be.
Its just that nothing theyve liked has come their way yet.

There's very little chance the Leafs trade Nylander and get better this season as a result imho.

For better or for worse, the best solution might be to try and win with him this season, even if he's unsigned past this year.

Because weakening the team while you're trying to win it all makes little sense.

Once Matthews was signed I think they kicked the can to the end of the season.

Nice - so focus with tree d then I guess.

I like Friedman but that’s an odd thing to put out there. If they had of liked a return they would’ve made a trade.

No trade = No like

Would be crazy to here Friedman say they loved numerous offers and though the team would be better but decided against making the team better ha

Perhaps, although there was little doubt Matthews was getting signed at more or less that number so does it really affect their position on Nylander?

Of course.

The prospect of going into the season with both unsigned and having multiple injuries and having as down season could be disaster.

Sign AM, and figure out Nylander.

Nylander is going to sign anyways. Just won't be until halfway through the season.

Treliving disagrees which is why the Leafs have been active in trade negotiations.

A trade for a stud defender (I'm looking at you, Mr. Pesce) would actively improve this lineup by providing for a proper distribution of talent.

It's possible that there simply is no hockey trade at this point to be made but it's clear that the Leafs: a) recognize the imbalance and/or b) aren't particularly looking forward to losing Willie in the off-season for nothing.

So he has been in trade talks but hasn't liked anything because it would make the team worse?

Seems like he agrees with Sabeh...The all mighty broken clock habs fan

Also Willy out and Pesce in is terrible for the leafs.

I just want to see what we have in Liljregren before we trade elite 1st line wingers for top 4 D.

His trajectory should land him as a 2nd pairing D this year, lets see if he does it.

Did you read the article?

It says Pesce is not on his no trade list...meaning he would accept a trade to Toronto.

Edit:

Apparently I can’t read

Who calls it a "trade list" its a "no trade"

I think this is the D we go into the season with, 100% will be different come TDL though.

What I've read is Treliving is a guy that always has irons in the fire. He's probably talked about every guy except Matthews with other teams. It doesn't seem like meaningful information that he discussed Nylander with teams.

I'm not taking any random rumor talks seriously unless they are confirmed by Eklund with a rating of at least E3.

I’m seeing it the same way. I think this D is regular season functional but simply doesn’t have the defensive grit for the post season. We’ll see, tbh I’m not expecting any notable moves for the preseason now, not even Nylander. They’ll bury 2-3 guys into the AHL and maybe make a “tweak” (a guy like Jarnkrok for someone $500K cheaper solves the problem).

Not expecting any big movements but I’m still interested in how they shape up for the cap.

They need to see how Liljregren progresses and see if he can consistently handle tougher mins.

They also have a question mark in Timmins who could provide good good value.

Benoit and Gio.

At this point there is no reason to make a trade unless its a no brainer with the cap.

Yeah, there's about 100 quotes from GMs in various sports that say "if I didn't talk trades, I wouldn't be doing my job."

“I think the Maple Leafs just decided to keep him for this year. I think they looked at trading him. I don’t think they liked what’s out there.”

They seem to have concluded against trading him for insufficient value in the name of asset management or a proper distribution of talent.

Like fantasy hockey when I offer 3 quarters for a dollar to the same guy each week.
