I think if Zach Parise does not come back it will hurt the team more than most are willing to admit. The questions that come will be who is replacing the 20 red lights and who is replacing the endless effort and speed.

Zach has been a fine Islander. You just wonder how much he would have left after another long season and if the Islanders make the playoffs?

I doubt he was going to pass up on getting paid the last $4M he was owed on that deal

Yes, just saw that. He may want to see how the team is doing before he commits to playing again.

The important thing is John MacLean will be back as our PP coach thankfully. Phew, I thought we may lose him. Dodged a bullet there.

Coaching staff will also be back, Lou said. Asked about the power play: "I'm not concerned about the power play. I think the power play will rebound, respond."

We know Lou. You have no concern about PP or the offense.

We scored more PP goals than we gave up shorties. That's a high bar we set for the PP.

Nope, don't blame him at all. Also, he was collecting a fat buyout check the past couple seasons. Now he has to live on whatever the Islanders are willing and able to pay him.

He's still getting $833,333 a year from Minnesota until the end of the 2028-29 season

Purely speculation, but Stefan Roesner brought up the idea earlier in the week that it's not out of the question to think that the Isles could potentially sign Tomas Tatar since we're almost at training camp and there's still no word of him signing anywhere.

Elliotte Friedman just tweeted this:

@FriedgeHNIC
Two bits of news: Tomas Tatar has switched agents, and is believed to be leaning somewhere east.

Still probably unlikely, and would likely take a little bit of cap gymnastics, but it could be a good add for the third line

OK, did not know that. Was he getting paid at a higher pay rate earlier in the buyout? I honestly don't even know how buyouts work.

A little more fuel for your fire. James Nichols, NJ Devils beat reporter, tweeted this:
"Tomas Tatar is now represented by Newport Sports Management who also represent Josh Bailey, Cal Clutterbuck, Casey Cizikas, Matt Martin, Bo Horvat, J.G. Pageau, Zach Parise.... Errr, he may not be going very far... #NJDevils #Isles"

Nope. Buyouts of a player age 26 or older pay the 2/3 of the remaining contract value over twice the remaining length (younger than 26 get paid 1/3 of the remaining money over the same timeframe, but those are relatively rare)

So if you're owed $6M in actual money with 3 years left on your deal and get bought out then you end up getting paid $4M spread over 6 years

In Zach's case he was owed $10M over the last four years of his deal. So he was/is owed $6.66M spread over 8 years. Which works out to about $833k per year until 2029

Interesting. I think he'd be a good add, but he was making $4.5M AAV on his last deal. Isles definitely can't do that and would have to get creative to fit pretty much anything into their cap situation. They're currently negative almost $500k.

They could send some combination (or all of, really) of Johnston/Martin/Clutterbuck to Bridgeport to save about $3.5M which would leave them with just short of $3M in cap space. Also Kuhlman which would add another $775k, leaving them with around $3.6M. Maybe Tatar signs for $3.5M.

That seems like a steal for the Avs. Definitely piqued my interest.

Yeah kind of figured he wasn’t coming. With Parise out at least to start he could’ve been a nice replacement for his scoring. Have to hope for Wahlstrom to take a big step this year.
