if ryan johnson made the opening night roster over stillman or bryson
the sabres would have 5 d men picked in the first round and samuelsson picked with the first pick in the second round
and if 1 of the first rd picks make that extra spot up front except for greenway and olofsson were picked in the first round

The Bills missed the playoffs from the time I was 9 until I was 27. They could lose the Superb Owl 8 times in a row and I would take it 100/100 over Trent Edward's drought football.
The same goes for this Sabres team. Irrelevance is miles worse than heartbreak - Hank Balling
Ah! The trophy for the wisest team in football. I always wondered how they measured this. Highest Combined Wonderlic score?
In all seriousness, I think it's the stagnation that makes it worse. The drought wasn't bad because they weren't good. It sucked because it was so repetitive. I think that's why the Maple Leafs comparison is relevant here. They're obviously not at the level of ineptitude that the Sabres have been, but it's still certainly a case of "wake me up when you do something different". |

Sports teams are a business, and like any other business, everything moves in cycles.
The bills were elite for a period of time, sucked for a period of time that perhaps extended longer than it needed to, and are now in a great position again to do something special.
In the heat of the moment, I can see why people think I’m off my rocker.
But once you start to enter the downtrend again, it always goes back to “what could have been”.
So yes, when it’s Super Bowl/Stanley Cup or bust, and you ultimately bust, it’s just as painful of being irrelevant in my eyes.
The Chargers wasted Fouts, Rivers, and are currently wasting Herbert.
The fact that the Bills and Sabres calling cards are Super Bowl losses and lamenting Eastern Conference Finals losses it is incredibly sad. |

The problem with this line of thinking is that irrelevance doesn't cause you pain, it just makes you numb. So if you're someone that's so scared of risk that you'd rather be numb than feel pain, then yes, it would be just as bad. Irrelevance leads to apathy, which is what I felt towards the Bills pretty much after Bledsoe was let go until somewhere after McDermott was hired. I had got there with the Sabres too right when they made the moves they did out of Covid, and I'm still not sure we're not living in hockey's version of the Emperor's New Clothes. So, I can't blame anyone for saying that feeling pain is better than feeling nothing at all. |

It all boils down to expectations.
Best things in life come when you don’t expect it.
When there is an expectation and you fall short, it triggers the same emotions as if you knew you didn’t have a chance in the first place.
The Bills and Leafs are expected to be a contender. The Baltimore Orioles and the Detroit Lions having success this season are playing with house money.

This is proving me wrong ?
You didn’t even answer my question.
Which team added a more impactful player that improves their cup chances in the present and future other than Bedard ?
Unless Connor McDavid got traded this offseason and nobody told me ?
But thank you for wasting my time back reading |

When the timeline for you to be right is infinity of course you won’t be wrong.
Chicago got a franchise player. They also aren’t guaranteed anything beyond just that.
It’s absolutely no different front the Sabres drafting Eichel in ‘15. We all thought that was going to guarantee us playoffs/championships.
It didn’t |

I answered. Bedard is nothing until he does something; the Oilers(still waiting for that McDavid Cup, too), Sens, and Nordiques(though I will stipulate they got a pretty fücking good player for Lindros, after a fashion) were all super pumped for "the next Gretzky" and they got fück all in return, so drafting 1OA ten years in a row gets you fück all but you'll lose all your fans along the way. Because no one will watch that sh¡t, but being among the best regular season teams, winning playoff games, but ultimately falling short, means you already have a good team. You're not waiting for "the next Gretzky" who almost certainly won't be, and then the cycle starts anew.
Enjoying the ride of a good team beats the sh¡t out of rooting for losses and being an imbecile and cheering when your team loses a late season game so they get better odds at drafting some kid who's done nothing. |

Build around an Eichel and you win a cup.
If you don’t have an Eichel, no cup.
Chicago just added a franchise 1C, no other team made a move that impactful this season.
So yes apart from winning the cup, getting Bedard was the second best outcome an NHL franchise could have and Chicago are the benefactors

This is a weird hill to take a stand on. Sure, they added a great player and in a vacuum that's awesome, to get to that point you need to be horrendous. The Sabres aren't going that way and no one thinks they should all what are we doing here?
Training camp starts in the morning so I'm excited. |

And in the case of Minnesota, NYR, Montreal (this century) and Nashville equates to 0 cups.
Why ? No franchise 1C.
But at least they can say they made the playoffs and the Hank’s of the world could go to bed happy at night |

It has nothing to do with the current composition of the Sabres, more so to do with the merits of tanking which has obviously been a hot topic throughout the drought.
Meanwhile Johnathen Toews, Patrick Kane, Sidney Crosby (lotto but nonetheless), Evgeni Malkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Alex Ovechkin, Victor Hedman, Steven Stamkos, Jack Eichel, Nathan Mackinnon, and Cale Makar all have at least one Stanley Cup Ring.
All of that losing though amirite |

95+% of us were good with tanking for Eichel.
Not sure what your point is here.
Elite 1C is one important part of a team. The Sabres failed to properly surround that with NHL talent
Where’s the evidence Adams knows how to surround a core with complimentary NHL talent?
Honest question. We have a capable top 2 franchise D and top 2 centers with 3/4 good up and coming or established wingers.
Why aren’t we penciled in for a playoff spot? |

Honest answer, the parity of the Eastern Conference.
The 11th and 12th best teams in the East I think would make the playoffs in the West.
Carolina, New Jersey, and Toronto to me are the only definitive locks (although I’m sure most would disagree and include NYR and Tampa)

Having things fall short when there are expectations, meaning heartbreak, does not trigger the same emotions as being totally irrelevant from the start, at least not for most people.
Irrelevance has no emotion, as it's total detachment from caring at all. |
