It's not even like Edmonton has gone out and been active trying to secure a true #1 goalie.

Berlin, Bunz, Campbell, Gustavsson, Koskinen, Montoya, Nilsson, Scrivens, Skinner, Smith, Stolarz, and Talbot.

These are the goalies that McDavid has played in front of.

That is criminal negligence on the part of their GM and front office.

There's still hope Skinner can be good enough.

But yeah, that's not an impressive list.

There's always the possibility Campbell gets back to an acceptable level (like in the Toronto years) and not the god forsaken dog poop of a season he had last year.

But that's a bad contract to carry when you're trying to compete.

Campbell was the criminal one.

I get wanting to take a chance on him (we did, and it didn't work out), but why so much $$$ and term?

It's crazy how some contracts are signed and you immediately know it's a bad one.

Yet someone paid alot of money by a nhl team to make decisions still decided to do it.

I mean, someone in the Oilers decision brain trust must have said something right?!?

Savvy vet tips:

1. Bring your own condiments. Otherwise you might get your dogs but also have to wait for condiments. Tiny salad dressing bottles from the dollar store work well. You can bring diced onions, kraut, etc in a ziplock bag. It is possible to trade excess deluxe condiments for dogs from other patrons later in the game, to avoid lining up again to reup on dogs. Hot sauce is a valuable commodity in the secondary dog market.

2. Bleacher bargains stand has cheaper beer.

3. Eat hot dogs to face.

In this way, I sucked back 10 dogs before the opening pitch. I learned my lesson. I'll do it again.

None of these are guys you would expect to start for a contender. The Leafs tried it with Campbell and it didn't work and Toronto had a deeper squad to cover up his mistakes.

My wild guess is their goalie scout "saw something" that they figured they could correct and get him back to his peak.

And throw in a little irrational Toronto hate - "they were using him all wrong" and blammo, you have a $5M x 5 years, M-NTC offer on the table.

Campbell did good enough in Toronto to give his team a chance to win imho.

They didn't lose vs Montreal or Tampa because of him.

None of this justified giving him a massive deal but as a cheap option in net, he did just fine.

You are right about Soup in Toronto. His time in Edmonton hasn't lived up to expectations and McDavid isn't going to ride him to a Cup.

Leafs really dont have a bonafide goalie for matthews and marner either.
Not easy to find.
Edmonton really screwed up by paying jc that much over that term.

That's not a mistake. At least I don't think so.

It's doubling down on trying to win with Crosby/Malkin/Letang.

Might as well do that if you're not gonna sell them.
