That's not a mistake. At least I don't think so.
It's doubling down on trying to win with Crosby/Malkin/Letang.
Might as well do that if you're not gonna sell them. - Scabeh
and Dubious has a 7yrs contract so he tries one/two more time then the up coming rebuild in a few years |

Leafs really dont have a bonafide goalie for matthews and marner either.
Not easy to find.
Edmonton really screwed up by paying jc that much over that term. - Fakepartofme
Really?
Sammy being top 10 in Save % and GAA (7th and 6th) & just outside the top 10 (11th) in wins despite him being hurt a fair bit seems to indicate he is in fact a bonafide goalie that 20+ teams would have probably loved to have had from a results perspective last season.
He's also only 26.
I'm fine with the Leafs rolling with Sammy and Woll.
To me trying to make trades to capture lighting in a bottle with someone like Helly or Bob is wasteful and totally a 'the grass is always greener' approach to goaltending.
Hellebuyck is a great goalie but as much as everyone gushes about him and how he would get the Leafs further he hasn't won Winnipeg jack poop in the playoffs really. He's won a whopping 3 rounds in 5 playoff appearances - 2 of those rounds were won way back in 2018.
Bob sucked big time since signing his massive contract and has had one Cinderella playoff run last year that ended up in a finals spanking.
Guess we will see how it plays out but I'm good with the 25 and 26 year old tandem to start the year and see how it plays out.

I like sammy and what theyve done with him
But hes not a bonafide starter yet, pretty close.
He definitely wasnt when the leafs got him, which was the point of my reply. Throughout the matthews era, the leafs have always had questions in goal. Not easy to find.
But i do like the tandem as well, considering the cap restraints. |

I'd also say they had a bonafide starter in Andersen in the Matthews era but he needed a change of scenery clearly. He was obtained from a team where he was the starter and simply transitioned into the Leafs starter. The first what 3 years of Freddy he played unreal - top 10 in the league easily, top 5 in some cases. The Leafs team and style of play was more the issue than him in those first 3 years.
Curious what you feel will make Sammy be a 'bonafide starter'. To me he sure looked like one to me most of last year - injuries were the issue (IMO).
I agree Sammy was another Bernier, Campbell type experiment where it was a good backup goalie the Leafs grabbed to see if he could be a starter, because it was believed he could be. The first 2 tries never really panned out but hopefully this one does with Sammy. I am much happier knowing that if it doesn't they are developing WOLL at the same time to become a starter though. |

Of the top 30 goalies in NHL wins last year, Samsonov was 11th in wins, while being the 8th youngest.
I like those stats. |

He’s also confident enough to not only handle but love playing in Toronto and let’s face it that’s a notably big deal. |

I do love his interviews - he has a "Bryz" vibe to them.

Agreed. chasing Helly seems like the kind of thing that could backfire. I don't think goaltending was our problem in the playoffs last year. |
