Pinto put up better number than Lafreniere, has really good size and play a solid defensive game. He will likely get the same deal as Lafreniere (a little more). - spatso
Can't see him getting more then Lafreniere at this point. Maybe $2-2.3 million for 2-3 years , bridge deal.
I am still hoping we bring an LTIR contract over for this year's cap difficulties. |

One down and one to go. Sens sign Sokolov to a good deal IMO. 1 year at $775,000. A show me type of deal. He is still an RFA after the season. If he goes to the AHL he will make $120,000. Sens still have $120,000 in cap space.
If the Senators want to sign Pinto and Josh Bailey ...... there has to be a trade ....
1) Joseph and Brannstrom
2) Bring in an LTIR contract
But everyone knows that. |

OK so apparently Peter Chiarelli is joining Ottawa in some way, shape or form. I get this team likes homegrown boys, but that's kinda scary. Won a cup, but did so largely off 4 months of Jeff Gorton's expert interim moves and drafting. Worth looking up, I hadn't realized just how much Gorton did for that team only to get fired shortly afterwards... By Chiarelli... Who is basically a Milbury meme from his time in Edmonton. He almost traded Hall for Ceci. Ceci managed to end up there on an unfavorable deal anyways. Ottawa can't shake the Chiarelli name. Or curse? I need to stop typing. |

Almost every team, every year comes out of training camp with an injury or two. Sens don't need a cap solution before opening game of regular season. Sometimes the smartest option is to do nothing. Just wait and see what evolves.

Moving Brannstrom doesn't accomplish much in terms of cap space, because they would almost certainly play Kleven in his place, which accounts for $1.0M of the $2.0M AAV savings. As for a potential contract resulting from the PTO to Bailey, it could easily be accounted for by demoting Kelly to the AHL, given that there are no cap implications for demoting NHL salaries under $1.0M. The easiest path forward really feels like Kubalik being sent to a team with a need for a 6/7 forward, and then just transferring the $2.5M AAV to Pinto. Teams like ANA/NSH are prime examples of where this could work. |

I feel like Dorion would hesitate to trade Kubalik since he just acquired him. He likely wants to show that the guy he traded for Debrinicat has some upside.
But like you said, it may be the best option. It would be too bad though, he does add some much needed depth to the team which is sorely needed. |

I'm talking about moving both Brannstrom and Joeseph. But that would also depend on how Greig/Jarventie/Sokolov/Bailey and Klevin perform in camp. We need to determine if any can replace the guys we would trade away.
Although I might add this .... in an interview today from the opening of training camp ..... Dorion made a few cryptic comments. I am paraphrasing here: "many teams in the salary cap era have to get creative when it comes to the cap. It is something Ottawa will look at".
I think this could be a vague reference to using an LTIR to fit everyone onto the team and sign Bailey. Go with 14 forwards, 7 d-men, 2 goalies ... to start the year. Simply making a trade to fit Pinto is not exactly being creative to fit the cap.
Stutzle, Tkachuk, Giroux, Norris, Batherson, Tarasenko, Pinto, Kubalik, Joseph, Kastelik McEwen, Greig/Sokolov/Bailey/Kelly/Jarventie will jostle for the last 3 spots.
Sanderson, Chabot, Chychrun, Zub, Brannstrom, Hamonic, JBD
Korpisalo, Forsberg
+ LTIR contract to stay within the cap.
Then we will see how it all plays out. Changes will filter in as players outright win playing time. |

Other than the cap implications, I am not sure why folks seem so ok to move Kubalik. He seems like a solid 3rd line forward for a team that struggled with depth scoring last season. Personally, I am excited to see how he will fit.
Moving Joseph makes the most sense. It will be a harder contract to move but the Sens have picks and some players that could be used as sweeteners. The Habs acquired Pearson yesterday which was a move that saved the Canucks money. While it’s just a one-year contract for Pearson, its still money moved. With training camp approaching, injuries may occur to make a move more feasible.
I am not in the panic boat for a Pinto contract yet. Tkachuk was also a very late signing and that worked out ok.
I have always felt that moving Forsberg should be investigated. While $2.75 mill is likely the going rate for a backup it is not chump change for a backup on this team. I also feel the Branstrom signing was redundant for the player that he is. He isn’t passing Chabot, Chychrun, or Sanderson on the depth chart and guys like Klevan, JBD, and Thompson could all be at the level he is when training camp starts and make half the money he will.
There is money to move around to accommodate a Pinto contract. Who knows, maybe Forsberg has a setback with his knees and has to go back on LTIR and everything works without a trade.

Agreed on Kubalik. While everyone says he's inconsistent, adding a 20 goal scorer to that third line will be huge in helping the depth. He could even help Joseph play better.
One silver lining with Joseph is that he really can't do any worse than he did last year, and I predict will be better this year, but still not live up to that contract.
Realistically speaking, what would it cost to move a contract like Joseph's? |

But on Day 1 of training camp, GM Pierre Dorion noted that Norris tweaked something shoulder-related at captain's skate last week and will begin camp in a yellow non-contact jersey.
there's you cap space for Pinto, watch Norris be on LTIR, this is also why you don't trade Pinto, Norris career could be over before it starts if he gets injured so easily |

Not good to hear Norris having any kind of shoulder issue... hopefully it's a legitimate tweak, and not related to his problems last year.
As for Kubalik, I just don't see the same upside... at least in the realistic context of the coming season. Right up front, I will say that I believe they seriously diminished his value by signing Tarasenko, but I also believe that move speaks volumes about the team's impression of him. Realistically, he's not going to score 20G from the 3rd line with limited PP exposure, and from a defensive perspective I don't think he's capable of matching Joseph/Bailey. And for me, it's more important for them to maintain the defensive quality of their 3rd line vs. adding scoring depth beyond the top-2 lines. |

Shoulders are really tricky. Right now I am in the early stages of rehabbing a torn rotator cuff (no surgery). Rest and more rest and 3x per day very gentle motion exercises followed by ice and deep massage. Really painful, seizes up from scar tissue, hard to sleep. Shoulder down to elbow feels locked when I wake up, usually in the middle of the night.
But, I am told I have it easy. Surgery (like Norris) is really difficult and rehab is very challenging. Set backs are always a part of the rehab process and sometimes the shoulder will never make it back to where it was.
If nothing else, Norris should never be allowed to take another face off.

When it comes to shoulder injuries it is about patience. Young athletes heal quickly for most injuries. Shoulders heal, but it requires patience and time. Hard to convince a kid that he needs to take more time to heal once the injury has stopped hurting.
Easing Norris back into his game makes a lot of sense and even the fans require patience when dealing with this kind of injury. |

Out of curiosity, is Ek and the rest planning on starting up podcasts again? Did I miss something. Lack of content is making me search for other podcast content. If this keeps up I may have to go to Spittin Chiclets or Coming in Hot .... or something to give a reasonable outlet for hockey talk. |

The ottawa locked on sens guys are good. Not sure of their names. They are both naturally talented for listening or watching. I watched many different locked ons from across the league.theese guys are head and shoulders above the others. And many other podcasts for that matter . I could easily see both or 1 moving up to the big leagues |

Ross Levitan and Brandon Piller. Every day those guys are out with new content without fail, player interviews, front office interviews. They know their stuff. SDPN's casts are also a good place to hear about league news IMO (it's always nice when the Sens irk Leaf homers - watch them react to Stutzle's recent Leafs salary shade) and of course 32 thoughts. Chiclets' tone is a touch too Jersey shorey/party bro centric, not really my vibe but they get great interviews and certainly the most recent two eps on Babcock are worth a listen. Not sure what's up with HB going dark these days, likely some personal stuff behind the scenes. |
