10M for Nylander isn't foolish - many many teams would pay it and Toronto may.
I think you will be disappointed in the outcome of this saga when he either re signs with the Leafs for a salary that you think is too much / or they in fact use him as an own rental.
I think trading a player just to 'get something' vs using him as a rental if what you can get doesn't help you now when your contending is stupid. I'd gladly take a season of Nylander as a rental vs picks and prospects that won't help for 4 or 5 years.
I also don't believe Tree is worried about it if he does leave to the extent people think / that forces him to trade him for pennies on the dollar.
The concept of a star player "leaving for nothing" isn't exactly true, cap space is gained if he ends up as an own rental & there is huge value to cap space - especially for a team like Toronto.
As much as he's been labelled money hungry I think he really does want to stay in Toronto and will take SLIGHTLY less than what he could get in UFA to do so like Matthews did. It might be a shorter term deal but who really knows.
We will see. - Cush29
In a cap world and for a team that could use future pieces and current pieces to fill voids, the whole idea of "own rental" is foolish. We've had willie the past 7 years, we got to round 2 once, if it turns out domi, bert and Klingberg are adding extra offence (not expecting much from domi) and tree feels he is getting the right pieces back, of course he will do a trade. The idea that he'll trade for pennies on the dollar is foolish as well.
He wont be forced into a trade, which is why i feel like a sign and trade is best if willies demands are too much, you have willie all year and you get pieces for him at the end of season.
I dont care what another team would pay willie, we've seen teams overpay and offer stupid contracts to players all the time....Toronto shouldnt spend 10m per on him. We've got some cap flexibility coming up, try and save every dollar you can.....even if its just $500 000 per.

So your theory is Willy is why they haven't got past the 2nd round.
That's.....uh.....interesting.
Sorry but foolish is worrying constantly about years down the road at the expense of making the team worse today, when your contending, Making the team worse now is most likely what you get if you trade him for picks and prospects, sure you re-stock the cupboards a bit but to me the cost to do so (now) isn't worth it if you really want to go for it and win a cup.
So what do you think the value of Nylander is to the Leafs this season and do you actually think they can make a trade and get that same value back?
I strongly believe that's not going to happen since he's a UFA at the end of the season. As far as a sign and trade - why would Nylander sign a contract to be traded at this point? It would have to be an insanely great contract for him and I don't know what team would do that vs just look to sign him as a UFA and not have to give up anything.
He seems like the next Ricky Romano.....which kinda' sucks.
That being said it's gotta' be hard being the guy they had built up to be the ace of the starting rotation and all, get the opener and then end up where he has.
Flip side / reality is that he was terrible so I am a bit confused as to why 'his camp' wouldn't get that he wasn't gong to be able to be a part of the Jays as they battling to get into the playoffs.
It's a business and teams need to do what it takes to win at the professional level.

Wtf? Is that what you got? My gawd. Not willies fault. No blame.
No, the reason they havent gotten out of the 2nd round has nothing to do with willie. Never said that or suggested it. Just said theyve had him for 7 years, no team success, so no harm if he isnt here for the next playoff run. If that is the case
He would do a sign and trade cause by then he would know he isnt staying with Toronto and would get an extra year

lol ok you are the one who keeps trotting out the 'haven't got out of the 1st round in X years" only to immediately be replaced by "Have only won 1 round in X years" as soon as they won a round and posted it in a convo about Willy.
He was arguably their best playoff performer so I do think there is harm if he isn't on the team for the next run.
Even if he knows he isn't coming back why give the Leafs the power to find his next contract vs his agent? The Leafs would clearly have their own interests at heart vs his agent who would only be concerned about Willy. This is why unless the contract on a sign and trade is insanely great for Nylander I don't see it happening.
We will see I guess, I'm kinda' tired of talking about it already and it's not even pre-season yet - I'm hoping they get something done early on in the season or this will be the debate all season. And that's kinda' fine with Leafs fans but when the other fan bases start coming in here and yipping and chirping about it with their super hot takes and trade proposals (Nylander for a back of pucks) I feel like we will all get tired of it pretty quickly.

I understand the ego thing and it being difficult to go back down, but to refuse to show up only does a disservice to yourself and team.
But ya exactly, he was terrible...horrible, no clue why his camp would be so against this.
Its too bad, he had some great stuff, hopefully he gets past this. Still young
Maybe if Rodgers smokes some horse paste he'll be okay. Definitely shouldn't get one of those scam MRIs though...I heard those things turn you woke. - Zezel

He wasnt their best performer this past year, prior to it though he was for sure. Just saying the leafs havent done poop with him on the team (one playoff win), so im not afraid to go into the playoffs without him.....if others have stepped up in scoring and youre getting talent back (not trading for peanuts)
Also he wouldnt be giving the leafs the power to find his next contract, im sure him and his agent would be hunting that out. Just like with Tkafack, he wanted to go to Florida. If willie has a good relationship with Toronto but understands they cant afford him im sure he'd be like "heres a list of teams i would play for, heres the money i want, if you can work out a sign and trade for the extra year, great". Players have done it in the past.
It wouldnt be a leafs season if there wasnt some sort of drama or player to be signed again hanging over it.
After willie gets worked out, we have marner nexy year. He got his extra money on the previous contract so he shouldn't want too much of a raise. But that would be too easy.
We'll see.

Domi had something like 45 primary points last season, of his 56.
If he plays on the 2nd line, I don't think the primary point totals will be the same but I think his total points will go up.

The big IF in all this is that Tre can get equal value (presumably someone on D) for Nylander. You’d have to think that this has been tried with nothing enticing found. If that’s the case I’m with Law’s suggestion of using the TDL to go shopping for an RHD
