At this point, it’s pretty clear Heinola needs to be in the starting 6. Waiving Stanley, sitting Schmidt to start, and keeping Chisholm is also pretty clear.
Stanley won’t be claimed at his cap hit, and the added weight seems to have robbed even more of his skating.

I wonder if Viel could grab a forward spot? Provide some much needed toughness.
I'm not a huge Appleton fan. So.....?

Viel has no NHL caliber skills to his name. The Jets are already a big team. He serves no purpose beyond tanking his linemates.

Liked his play in pre-season games, but you're probably right.

The Lets don't strike me as a big team, if big, don't play big. They need some added muscle to play against the tough teams. Protect guys like Perfetti and Ehlers.

Perfetti, Ehlers, Connor, and Namestnikov are the only “undersized” forwards on the team. Vilardi and Kupari are also particularly feisty, along with Lowry, Barron, Samberg, Dillon, Nino, and even Morrissey (he’s got murder in his veins, if you remember him in junior). We’re fine.

Yea, ok, fine, we'll see. If only Samberg was more aggressive.

Anyways Viel on waivers, so, so much for that idea, for now.

Looks like Ville has made the team. Good for him, he's stick with it. Looking forward to some new blood.

I think fans will be surprised with Vilardi, Iafallo and Kupari. Was surprised the Jets were able to get Iafallo included in deal - good all-round player.

I believe that knee-on-knee contact that Heinola took in tonights game will have him out till at least January. Tremendously disappointing! I feel just terrible for him right now.

Just feel awful for a guy, that as soon as something good develops, it's ripped away in a heartbeat. Here's hoping a speedy recovery. Maybe by US thanksgiving, a historically quick recovery from a high ankle sprain, knee, or whatever the injury is.

Ville to injured reserve, Capobianco, Fjallby and Delia on waivers so it appears Gus, Stanley and Chisholm remain as the spares.

Hard to imagine that Armia doesn't get picked up by another NHL team due to his versatility and his PK abilities.

Raphael Lavioe is another name that one would think surely gets looked at by another team . A big gamble by the Oilers on a promising prospect who currently only struggles a bit with his defensive game.

Martin Jones represents a good pick for a team needing some goaltending depth.

The Hellebuyck and Scheifele extensions are brutal, I had a feeling they were coming soon but still shocking when you actually see it.. 😳.. That Hellebuyck deal is likely to be a future buyout, I'm sure Chipman had his hands in on these awful deals... 🤮

It’s a good thing we got a hometown discount for a couple players I’m guessing had next to no takers on the trade market. One of these I guess would be palatable, 2 is ludicrous. Let’s put Wheeler legacy contract in the rear view mirror and sign 2 new ones.

I talked about legacy. These players both see a path to winning the cup and either way they will both have their Jerseys hanging from the rafters after they retire. I certainly also believe Sheifele will become part of the mgmt group after he retires. For those worried about the long contracts all as I can say is that both these players train seriously hard, Gary Roberts hard. They will be fine.

In 5-7 years the cap will be much much higher and these contracts will look decent. Just look at Dahlin signing a LT contract for $11 M. Morrissey's contract looks pretty good in comparison. So do these signings. I estimate the cap goes up by $3 M next year and $2 M the year after that. So the extra $5M we just spent on these two contracts gets nullified in two years.

I'm very happy about how Chevy got this done and happy as a fan. I think it's naive to critique a situation where we keep two top-notch players in a town where most players don't want to come.

Now that I’ve had a chance to stew on this news for a bit, I’m a little better with it. I’ll give this new lineup some time and hope it’s not 4 or 5 years of regrets. Fly is set to come back for game 1, so let’s get this season started! Go Jets go.

These players saw the path to making the most money possible was by signing with the Jets, no chance either was getting a $59.5M contract next summer in free agency.

Game 1 could have been a totally different result as the Jets outplayed Calgary for most of the game. I put 90% of the blame on the goat of the game Nate Schmidt for a needless icing when he had tons of time to make literally any other play while his tired players scrambled to get off the ice. A very tired Kupari gets the other 10% for not staying with his check on the winning goal but to be fair it was Schmidt who put him in that position.

Different look Jets though. I liked a lot of what I saw. I felt Helle could have been a bit better though. He was out by Markstrom last night. Tough to play another team on their home opener and with all that extra incentive with the touching Snow Memorial thing. I bet the first thing players do when they look at the schedule is to see how many home openers they have to play in other buildings. It must suck when teams start on a road trip and hit several home openers.

I'm guessing that we no longer have a writer covering the Jets on HockeyBuzz. There has been no new article for a while when there were lots of subjects to write about in training camp and with big extensions and opening night. I therefore assume Jacob is done.

Am I wrong ?

You’re not wrong about Nate Schmidt and Kupari but I put the blame on Bowness for that. He’s got to use the time out to get people coordinated and rested.

It’s early in the season, fitness isn’t 100% yet and the players don’t know each other well enough to coordinate well together. Call the time out. What else do you have it for?

Gotta think after a flurry of Jets articles, followed by an extended period of crickets, we are most likely without a writer. Jets new blood looked really good last night, I went to bed before the game ended and didn't see highlights, is Ehlers now back on the shelf?

I agree. A good time for a time-out, although are you allowed to call a time-out when the puck is in your own zone ? I've never looked at the rule in depth.

you are right - not allowed after an icing. Not that anyone asked for it but here is the official NHL rule:

Rule 87 – Time-outs
87.1 Time-out - Each team shall be permitted to take one thirty-second
time-out during the course of any game, regular season or playoffs. All
players including goalkeepers on the ice at the time of the time-out will
be allowed to go to their respective benches.
This time-out must be taken during a normal stoppage of play.
Only one time-out, commercial or team, shall be permitted at any one
stoppage of play. For the purpose of this rule, a commercial time-out
is deemed an “official time-out” and not charged to either team.
Any player designated by the Coach will indicate to the Referee
(prior to the drop of the puck) that his team is exercising its option and
the Referee will report the time-out to the Game Timekeeper who shall
be responsible for signaling the termination of the time-out.
No time-out shall be granted following a face-off violation.
No time-out shall be granted to the defensive team following an
icing
, following the goalkeeper causing a stoppage of play from a
shoot-in from beyond the center red line, or when a defending player
accidentally dislodges the net causing a stoppage of play.
When a penalty shot has been awarded to either team by the
Referee, no time-out will be granted once instructions have been given to the player taking the shot and the goalkeeper defending the
shot. No time-out will be granted during the shootout.
No warm-up involving pucks on the ice shall be permitted for a
goalkeeper or replacement goalkeeper during a time-out. If, after one
warning, this continues, the Referee shall assess a delay of game
penalty to the offending team.
Television commercial time-out guidelines are established by the
League. However, no commercial time-out is permitted after the
scoring of a goal. No commercial time-out is permitted after the
calling of an icing infraction, following the goalkeeper causing a
stoppage of play from a shoot-in from beyond the center red line, or
when a defending player accidentally dislodges the net causing a
stoppage of play, except when a penalty or penalties are assessed
that affect the on-ice strength of either team.

I don't think Jacob is doing the Ottawa thing either.
