1/ I think the whole Babs thing has been blown way out of proportion. I do not think that asking to share pictures / your life with the coach to get to know them and understand their motivations and challenges is fundamentally wrong.
2/ There is an "old school hockey mentality" that still exists in the NHL (especially in management and in a lot of media) that does not recognize that most of the rest of world has changed to think and act differently. Babs (and likely most of the Blue Jackets management) fall into that category
I think the end is near for all those old school guys (not a bad thing), not because their approach no longer works, you got a bunch players that also have their own agenda and been told they are special since they were 9 and always treated differently. I do not think they speak the same language to understand each other properly.
Not all players are Richards, and not all coaches are old school - but those that are will never mix.
And it just takes 1 complainer (from either side) for it to blow up.
I think Babs got a raw deal here, but once everything blew up, there was zero chance he was gonna remain the coach..
And I say this as someone who has never been a Babcock fan. |

This may put the GM on the hot seat?? But who knows in this day and age of excuses and the old boys club. As he’s been the GM since 2012/13??? - Snots33_77
Kekalainen hasn't been a horrible GM, but yeah if I'm the owner I wouldn't be impressed. but hey, if the owner gave the green light on the hiring he's basically as dumb as anyone. |

I strongly disagree. asking for someone's phone to get personal information while you're in a position of authority over them is wrong, whatever the context is. |

Again.
Totally blown out of context, like the whole story.
People make it seem like he forced players to give them their phones and tell them their passwords and just went through their entire cache of photos.
Was this the best approach? Perhaps not. But people making this out to be something malicious are just (frank)ing bonkers.

even if he didn't "force" anyone to comply, the coach vs player dynamic is still there, and guys might feel bad and worry about some sort of consequence if they don't share their phone's content with him.
I'm not sure if you're trying to play devil's advocate just for the sake of it but I don't get how you could think it's acceptable or "not that bad". |

No, I am saying if you are coaching high performance players making millions of dollars, I get how he would want to understand what motivates them and or what personal challenges they have in their daily lives that may impact their play.
Everyone who interviews for a job goes through this, to a certain extent.
I get how people might not like the idea of sharing pictures as the start of that conversation, but I do not believe it was some form of "do it or you're fired because I need dirt on you" thing.
That is the bullpoop being fed, that I do not like.

that's the thing, he didn't have to literally present it that way for that to be on the back of the player's minds. and it's pretty hard to just forget about his background and the stuff he did while coaching other teams...
I'm also not okay about people distorting facts and making up bullpoop, but come on.

Your take.
I agree, asking for pictures is not the best move, but I believe it was a way to start a conversation and not done maliciously.
Thinking it is more than that is what seems totally bonkers to me.

the guy once asked Marner to create a list of all the players on the laffs roster, and then asked him to rank them based on their respective effort level in that particular season.
then he proceeded to showing the list to veterans on the team.
how is it "totally bonkers" to think he may have had bad intentions?
I'm starting to think you shared your phone with Mike and now he's got dirt on you... |

When the team captain and other players said they did not have an issue with it and the conversation they shared was fine, I have a hard time believing some of these bonkers takes... especially those trying to get clicks in the media.
But whatever.
I have said my thoughts, done with this.

I could care less….as he’s NOT coaching g the Habs.
But I thought I should recognize his sociopathic and devious ways to garner info from players instead of…..ummmmm…..let’s say……form a (frank)ing relationship and bond with your players??
The underhanded presidency set is tone and forward trajectory. His name and legacy is poop. Hence the bail……good riddance weirdo |

Ken Holland told Babs to play Chelios at the WC at Wrigley Field because he knew it would mean a lot. Babs complied, but dressed 7 dmen and gave Chelios 1 shift.
He scratched Modano for one game, causing him to miss 1,500 games by 1 game. |
