Just the pick would have been fine is what I'm saying. No need for Pearson. He will probably be traded at the deadline for another lower pick assuming he is healthy. - The Judge

you dont get the pick if you dont take Pearson and you have to keep Desmith, thats the point
but yes, I assume they will try to trade him down the road, if they can
I don't hate the trade, just don't love it either.
This helps make up for it though:

So the second set of Jeff Petry trades ultimately netted the Canadiens a second, third and fourth round pick in the 2025 draft, Gustav Lindstrom and Nathan Legare.
if the Canucks are actually going to use DeSmith, then the habs aren't really "dumping" him, I don't think acquiring Pearson was necessary... - Pat1993
It's dumb and always happens. Promises things, you want to speak, but busy. Email to ask about the plan and get no response. Decides to do something else before leaving and not tell me - mr.peanut

to get the pick and trade Desmith, yes, cause it just happened
I dont think Hughes wanted Pearson in a bad way, but he had to be a part of the deal
and he knows and might be able to trade him around TDL
