it is a long season, the ups and downs, Frost will go on a run, Coots will and Cates, they will also struggle, Torts knows this. Torts wants competition at each position, he is pushing buttons to make sure no one is comfortable. I think he feels Frost needs the extra kick in the AXX, while Cates does not. It is a little weird and old school but only an issue on the HB board. - wcorvette
That's the issue. Why does he feel Frost needs an extra kick? Frost is a player that has steadily improved since he came into the league. Has done everything the coaches have asked of him by all reports. As well as overcoming a major injury where he missed pretty much a full season of development. Frost should be getting more praise than criticism from the coach.

Name an established NHL player compatible for Morgan Frost to this point. What’s his ceiling? |

maybe because he is there every day and sees things that you are not privy to? maybe his past experiences with that type of player? |

i haven't seen that torts said frost needs an extra kick. he did speak about how he has progressed and will need to continue to progress to be a solid 2c in the nhl. he is not wrong. bascially said the same for cates. frost to improve defense, cates offense. |

Yea that quote wasn’t too crazy lol. He also has him centering a line of Farabee and Atkinson, pretty good spot for him to land |

It doesn't mention Laughton but it does mention Sanheim
https://clutchpoints.com/...ke-offseason-trade-rumors
This mentions Laughton
https://thehockeywriters....lyers-2023-trade-options/
Another mention of Laughton
https://www.flyersinsider...for-Scott-Laughton-248935
Recchi is relevant to the conversation. teams trade players they like and dislike, they make trades to better the team real time or for the future. The Flyers like Recchi but traded him for a top Dman. LeClair was was a throw in. - WhiskeyMan
none of those links say he was involved in the hayes /sanheim trade proposals.
As I noted earlier the blues offered picks. flyers turned them down as they have next to know interest in moving such a key cog as scot laughton. Hell he will probably be extended in 3 years.
recchi is not relevant to this discussion in anyway shape or form. The co-gm is clearly moving out or trying to move out guys he doesn't like.

right, on the second line, which would put cates with scott as a defensive line. Saw he spoke about cates and coots being used as the shutdown lines, which makes sense.
what was the quote or what did he say exactly? |

there really is none at center. cut and dry who the centers are at the present time.
Had he not been told to play frost wonder if he would still be here? - hello it's me 2050
Don't know, we all take stories that we hear at truth. Torts can be harder on Frost, but by Frost own admission he had to get use to playing vs men, it took him time. You add in Covid and the major injury, enter Torts, Frost was just establishing himself as an
NHL player. Torts favors players who get the details away from the puck, that is for sure. I think he looks at Frost and wants those details but he also sees a higher ceiling than Cates and others and he wants that too. I am not saying I agree with how Torts goes about it, but he is right to go about it. Competition or not, Torts wants them to earn it, not think they have it in the bag. Frost does feel like a laid back person, I can see Torts pushing him to get him fired up. |

Along the lines of frost has to continue to progress if he wants to be a top 6 player in thise league, and mentioned Cates, what is he, can he provide more offense, if so, what’s that mean for frost |

My hope is that the Flyers move away from antiquated and obsolete player development strategies and modernize their methods. Don't know if that can happen with Tortorella coaching.

I'm probably being a tad generous but like a Vincent Trocheck. 2nd line dude. Kinda can kill penalties. |

Almost 40 points playing center for the first time in his career on a bad offensive team. I think Cates has offensive upside and it would not surprise me to see Cates get up to 60 points with the minutes and playing with other good offensive players. I think Cates has Frost beat in terms of defensive play, puck battles, etc. but to get the 2C job he is going to have to score more. - jd250
Cates had a really strong season compared to his expectations. I have been a Cates fan since he was drafted. Right now I think he already at what his ceiling was projected.
He did play a fair amount of center in collage. They moved him around from year to year. I always viewed him as a center. His last year in collage he mostly played wing but before that he played a lot of center. |

Cates and Frost are two different players. Their is room for both. Why does it need to be Cates v. Frost? Play Cates in defensive situations and play Frost in offensive situations a majority of the time. Utilize what each player is good at.
Seems like a silly argument. 2C or 3C who cares about the label? - mickel25
Agreed. Utilize their strengths. But it would benefit them and the team if they both build on the other side of their game.

I'd really like to see Cates moved back to wing but that's not going to happen.

Yeah, I think point wise he would be more involved at wing. He is a Raffl type guy. Can play almost anywhere up and down the line up. Honestly, I felt his ceiling was going to be a strong 4th line center. He is showing he is more versatile than that already. In a good team he might fit well as a 4th line winger. But he should grow past that barring injuries (which he didn’t have an issue with injuries in college). |

That's the thing, on a good team, I see him as a 3C. The reason I would like to see him moved back to wing is that on a good team, he could be more than that. He could be a 2nd line winger.

Agreed. He being talked about in the same breath as Coots is, while not the same talent level, impressive. He is just so smart. Never would have guessed he would be this effective in the big leagues when he was developing in college. |
