No one's said anything about how Jeff Carter looked in his 10:23 of ice time. Oh well. I'm sure we'll get good commentary on him soon enough.

Nice. Glad we still have him. Hopefully something clicks soon in WBS.

Guentzel practiced with the main group for the first time today. Still no contact.

Z was rotating with Nylander on Malkin's line.

Hinostroza and Wagner rotating though Hinostroza got the bulk of the time.

All the other forwards practicing in a second group, probably just a matter of time until they're all sent down.

Other teams like their players, so I'm not all that surprised he wasn't claimed, but it's still pretty telling not one other team felt he worthy of an NHL roster spot. Even as a 7th D.

There's 13 teams currently over the cap and 8 more teams with less than 1 mill in space. I believe that to be a factor here.

Im really glad he passed through. I'm not near as down on him as others. I thought he was QBn the PP great in these pre season games. I thought he made nice plays here and there. I like having RD offense upside insurance in the system for call ups.

I'm definitely glad he's still here, he may be the only guy we can use as a RD replacement when Letang or EK go down.

I'm not too surprised either. There are a lot of roster logistics in camp so teams aren't likely to make claims this early. Once injuries happen and a team has a need for additional bodies I think he would be claimed if put on waivers. He's Pouliot 2.0 for us.

It's also possible they do really like Smith but just want a different type of player in that spot instead of three offensive minded Dmen on the right side. He'll also be WBS's top guy. Top pair, 1st PP. So, good reps to be getting.

I've heard hockey insiders such as Friedman mention sneaky good times to put players on waivers before.... Cant say I know for sure if this was one of them, or not, but it's quite possible.

I was only able to catch the 3rd period. Carter made 2 really nice breakout plays. One he kind of stopped and studder stepped a forehand back hand to hit Wagner? I think in stride to go on a 2 on 1. The other was just being in position being the first man back intercepting a pass through the middle. He looked somewhere between a 430 goal scorer and a guy in his last nhl season.

Carter is smart and skilled. Obviously age is his biggest issue and less minutes on the 4th line, less demanding minutes like on the pk and playing centre, and I still think he can be effective. I’d his play starts to diminish after 20-30 games I rotate in someone else for a couple weeks to give them some exp, give Carter a break.

Would still rather give a prospect a chance. And his contract is really the big issue. Even if he was on a vet min contract I’d be fine. If we could have had Tatar for 2-2.5m that could allow someone better like rust to play on the 3rd line to support doc and create offence.

In a reduced role, maybe Carter holds up. But I'd still rather have more cap space. Would be nice to carry a 23rd player particularly with Jake out

Smith cleared waivers because Sully hates young players.

Seriously though, he makes the league min and is 23 and no NHL team saw him as an upgrade for their roster.

As of today capfriendly has us at 1.795m under the cap with 12/6/2. So we could keep up a 13F and 7D provided they make 800kish or less each. Which could work for basically anyone except Pitlick. Pretty good cap wizardry there by doobs.

Maybe we even get a decent waiver pickup for depth by one of the many teams over the cap.

Hinestroza/Zohorna, Puustinen all make 775,000 and Friedman/Shea make the same. So yah, they could pick actually pick up another forward/D who makes 1M, or they could just pick from this group, which I am fine with.

Agreed. It's the best time of year to slip someone through. You might be right about the Pouliot thing....tweener. I'm still glad we didn't lose him considering our zero prospect depth.

Yea I'd like a POJ/Friedman third pair. Friedman brings something this team doesn't really have. I doubt anyone worth it will actually be on waivers, but you never know haha...

I prefer Ruhwedel for his PK ability, but neither guy is going to be a game breaker so I'm not going to complain who gets the call nightly.

It's crazy because he actually played very well for us last year, had a great rookie season, and a meh season in between. But I guess when you have Erik Karlsson, you don't need an Erik Karlsson light as much as someone to throw on the PK.

Shame though, I do think he can play. He even managed to drag Dumoulin to 60% Fenwick in 90 minutes together while playing his off side. Glad he's still around. Maybe the Devils shouldn't have pushed him to the NHL at 20 until he learned some defense though.

That's true, the Devil's probably rushed him about a year too soon.

Yea, Ruh is a dude who will be in position and is vanilla. Friedman will get out of position for physical play which can hurt sometimes, but at times we're gonna need an agitator in the dead middle of the season when we're playing a western conference team haha.
