Wasn't that a thing with Torts in VAN because he chose to live across the border? Guy would just delegate practices and team functions to his assistants so he could stay home lol.

3. Not practicing anything
Forget practicing shootouts, Torts had a problem with practice, period.

Gary Mason recounts:

“The players were unhappy about the amount of practice Tortorella was conducting. To put it a different way – players didn’t think they were practicing enough and that Tortorella took practice seriously enough…

Tortorella has different views about a whole bunch of things, about practicing the power play.

One of the things he did that really struck people as odd – he didn’t look at videotape of the team he was going to be facing.

There are coaches we know that coached in Vancouver that didn’t believe in coaching the power play. Mike Keenan was one of them.”

They didnt give up on Williams - they got a damn good Dman in that trade

If he hadn’t become so good we wouldn’t even be discussing it. In hindsight, you wonder if having Markov as a rental was worth it. At the time I’d have agreed.

The team was frustrated with his mounting injuries and the plateauing of his development at the time. It was a hockey trade for an immediate need, but there was still the aspect of pulling the plug on him as a potential future building block.

imo he's a great side piece, not a building block

I was going to add maroon. Williams is a long time ago but I’d add him

Hard disagree.

Not a superstar in terms of pure production, but he was one of the most important players on every team he landed with after the Flyers.

The Markov trade was shortsighted.

Well you can discount him because he’s so far back. It’s an example of a young player who we traded and went on to great success elsewhere.

Why the heck is Belpedio in the lineup?? We know what he is! This is not his first, or even his second training camp. He is 27 years old, he is what he is. Why waste this opportunity to see a kid you are still trying to learn about??

Agree on all counts. We used to be a riverboat gambling franchise hoping we’d spend out of trouble. We haven’t done great since the cap.

no it wasn't. flyers had a clear need. They were cup contenders. I bet not one person had an issue with that deal at the time.

The shortsighted move was then trading Danny to Nashville then sign both hatcher and rathje.

I discount him period as it is not valid. What you cant separate is that was a hockey trade. What he did later doesnt matter. It was a good trade at the time.

They didn't just throw him away or waive him. That was the main argument of your original statement.

Right, but on those teams he was the player added to help push to the top spot, but not the centerpiece.

Building block =/= centerpiece.

LA and Carolina would have had a hard time winning Cups without him. He was critical in the room and so clutch on the ice. And did ALL the little things.

Well, although it was a hockey trade, they did indeed give up on him. Had they properly assessed his potential I think they may have reconsidered that trade. I don’t believe they ever thought he’d become as good as he did.

I thought the coach did not like him, but I could be confusing why Sharp was sent away.

I’m hoping the Phils and my jays do well. It’s just a hockey debate on a hockey site. A lot better than the political debates we get into here. One thing I think we forget at times is that it’s not a zero sum game here. I enjoy having someone disagree with my assessment ina respectful debate. These are just general comments not aimed at you

I feel like they didn’t particularly value him as a price moving forward. Was it injuries or something else? Not sure. As the years went by I said why the hell didn’t we keep that guy? I also think they might have given up on him as at that time, flyers used to send out picks for rentals a lot more. I’m sure they could have done so without losing Williams. They just decided he wasn’t in their plans. That ended up being an oops

I do agree on that point. It should be young players all day every day.
