'Then' is an adverb conjunction in this case. "If" can be a conditional conjunction. Given the original sentence structure, you can remove "if" but another conjunction word such as "then" would still be needed. Regardless, the primary point of my post was under no circumstances was "than" appropriate as the conjunction.
