I agree he wouldn't. Then you trade him for a treasure. The issue is the PR hit and it would anger the fanbase. It would mean a financial hit for the franchise. Lots of reasons why they wouldn't do it. Doesn't change that from a hockey standpoint. The right move was to break it up.
- MJL

I think the fans would understand and ne okay with an age crosby wanting 1 last try at a cup somewhere else in his last year of his contract. 1 year left after this season.

I could also see Crosby saying I will retire a penguin and play no where else.

He will be in control.

From a hockey stand point? You keep one of the best players to ever put on skates on the team. That’s the best option. Pull the plug when he retires, what’s 3 more years in the grand scheme of things

This all does not excuse Hextall for the bad job he did. He knew the assignment when signing up and failed
- ClaudeFather

I haven't been discussing Hextall. I've been discussing the situation the Pens are in.

like flies to poop. Criticize Saint Ronnie and here comes Cliff to defend.

He was a below average GM for 2 teams. His moves in Pitt were horrible overall.

Like Chuck who had a "mandate" to win. They both failed miserably. One at least had 3 future HOF players who are still very very productive. Yet missed the playoff.

- hello it's me 2050

The only players that produced were the ones forced on him 😂 everything else he touched turned to sh!t

And the right move is you keep icing a competitive team as possible until the dynasty retires (while they have game left, which they clearly do)

Disagree. The dynasty is already dead and has been for a while. What happens when Karlsson, Malkin and Letang crash? They already don't have the depth.

They sacrificed depth for cups. The crash has been slow but it has been enjoying to watch.

They’ve gotten to watch competitive hockey for close to 20 years, nothing has been fun to watch from a flyers fan perspective. They’re the gold standard and the flyers are a laughing stock

It's already ended. They're just getting themselves deeper in and delaying the inevitable.

They were the gold standard. There is an inevitable cycle of death and then attempting to be re-born. Embrace it.

So, they re-sign Malkin and Letang and trade for Karlsson just to be competitive?

They’re clearly hoping for a break through bub , what’s the chances of that happening? I will say, it’s not like the east has any power houses. Things fell in place at the right time for Florida last year, you never know. They’re giving themselves a chance

This season may be the last hurrah for the Cindy version of the Pens. But historically they have drafted superb. (Albeit some lottery luck). I think they will be comptetive again fast.

It's been fun watching them fall from the top of the mountain over the past few years. Them scrapping the bed at then end of last season was great.

When your team is crap like the flyers, you look to little things to make you happy.

I think deep down Pittsburgh knows whats up. But they have to ride out the Crosby train until he retires or leaves at the end of his contract. They got 3 cups out of it and know that when its time to rebuild, its going to be long and painful.

They are like that aging actress who keeps getting plastic surgery ruining her face in the process. She will keep trying until she dies.

You're giving the thumbs up for doing to same thing that you criticized the Flyers for. You don't take on a player with a 10M cap hit just to be competitive. That's the very point. There is hope for more. The question is if it is the right play. Again, this is sports. They hang on as long as possible, make some other moves to dig the hole deeper until they can get to a point where it will be acceptable to the fanbase to end it and do what should've been done years ago.

And I totally agree with this route. Maybe they get a season here that clicks and they make a deep run. If I was a fan and saw 3 cups like that, I’d want to see it go until the wheels fell off.

We did not win 3 cups with the same core. And they think Karlsson will help their team.

That's true but the Flyers had Giroux and Voracek in their primes. Wayne Simmonds was a 25-30 goal scorer and one of the top PP goal scorers in the league. Schenn was breaking out and they had Couturier. Streit was a 50 point defenseman. They had a lot of good players. In hindsight, you wanted them to break it down.

I wanted them to make a decision! Your Franking savior chose to ride the middle. He traded Schenn and started his little half ass retool or whatever the hell that was.
