They're going to be paying their top 2 defensemen a combined $20M against the cap long term, and $25M when adding Samuelsson.
Going to need one or two of their D prospects to hit to properly fill out their D core.
Would've been nice to have a couple more D prospects to up their chances.
Good news: They have enough forward prospects to trade one for a high level D prospect.
Bad news: Teams hold on to quality D prospects like they're worth twice as much as forward prospects. - kingcong39
I said the same thing months ago.
This is why I mentioned not adding another high cap hit defensemen and people cried earlier this year that we had plenty of cap space.
I think it was Erik Karlsson people wanted or someone like that |

The $11M AAV is the cost of doing business with a cap limit that it about go up significantly in the next few years, for a star player who had all the leverage. - kingcong39

Could have been accurate and just part of negotiating.

I was literally about to say, "I bought tickets because Dahlin resigned" and see where that took us today. Beat me to it again Washeroo. |

Power is going to be looking to cash in big time if he has a good season.
I'm not even sure what a bridge deal would look like for him after the upcoming season. - kingcong39
They should lock him up long term, forget the Bridge just like Ottawa did for Sanderson, and that contract should be a rough comparable IMO. |

It’s what called a “feel good” press release right before the season.
So now you can stop crying for 5 minutes about Dahlin not signed. |

$6.5-7M? Figure Dahlin was 6, he'd want a couple extra inflation bucks. - QuinnFan
Also an extra year to work with, which is a little awkward. He'll be 5 years from UFA, so you could do a 4 year bridge. Backloaded 4@7m is probably fair.
Zegras got [email protected], not backloaded at all. If they want to use that as their comp, that would get a little ugly.
He's a #1. Find a way to get a long term deal done.

This The Sky is Falling with regard to Dahlin goes back to the Mike Pachla days...he was big about spreading BS about Dahlin's apprehension to stay and resign. |

11 million is a bargain for a top 5 nhl defender
Dahlin will outplay that contract on both sides of the ice |

Most Comparable to:
Rasmus Dahlin ($11M x 8)
1. Charlie McAvoy ($9.5M x 8)
2. P.K. Subban ($9M x 8)
3. Mikhail Sergachev ($8.5M x 8)

11:00 - its a good deal

All his comps have playoff and Stanley cup experience prior to signing monster deals.

I have very mixed feelings for the Front Office.
This is a good signing though. Now if they can get Power locked up at say 8 x $8.75 - $9.0m I'd be happy.
Still some other headscratch moves.
We'll see how it all plays out.
I'm pumped for the season! |

Like the 8 years. Did what they had to do, no complaints.
Let's not call it a bargain with comps in the 9-9.5 range. This one is in no way team friendly.

Overpaying a Norris Candidate by 500K a year to have him under contract for the next 9 seasons is being bent over the table ?
Is the shtick going to get old eventually ? Common my guy it’s been months on end of this, surely therapy can’t be that expensive for a guy who lives in the big city |

The NMC was expected, but surprised at their being virtually no signing bonus money in the deal, and the structure of it not being massively front loaded either.
