It is game 1 don't go all doom and gloom
Devils won 4-3 but we're completely outplayed by the wings in the 1st and didn't have their legs and without Hughes and vitek the game would have been over as the devil's didn't seem to have that energy you'd expect
I am sure that once the season gets in a flow the sabres will be better if there is any system put in place and teams don't just play the trap
From the highlights looked like there was little defensive structure and couldn't control the puck to create offense - dmarsden2988
I’m going to have to disagree. I would immediately start with the doom and gloom if I were a Sabres fan. |

sure is. I know we had a lot of hits last night but I still watched too many forwards not finishing checks and being to easy to play against. our defense does not scare anyone, I am not looking to thug it up, just play the game the right way. Finish every check and make people pay the price in battles. - hehateme
Spot on. Unable and unwilling. I think Donny is too much of a friend to these guys. They need a coach that's less enjoyable to be around if these are the efforts they'll turn in. |

Clifton not being able to overcome a 4 goal deficit himself is our problem?
- DirtyDan
No our problem is we acquired 0 needle movers to take this from a 82-85 point team to a 95+ point team.
It’s entirely resting on Levi’s shoulders |

It’s ok to say Clifton was our best off season addition.
It’s ok to say he played better then most of his teammates
It’s strange to blame Clifton for not doing enough
Foolish really - Boss34
Its ok to admit Clifton is not what this team needed on defense to take the next step
Resigning okposo girgensons and jost without even considering making our forward group deeper was foolish
Essentially running it back, pinning success on a rookie goalie and expecting something different
Really foolish |

Not 1 of the "needle movers" of our own did anything last night.. An addition of say Severson wouldn't of won us that game last night.
Coach needs to implement a better system, needs to add more to the PP than just Dahlin to tage to Dahlin to Cozens back to Dahlin to Tage back to Dahlin shot from the point blocked by Ranger1

The devil's didn't add any needle movers last season and had a massive jump
Ok jack going off helped but you have tage and cozens looks good and then you have dahlin
I think it's more to do with system and structure, either full risk and hope for rewards by going full attack but the issue is the defense struct is missing and either young unproven goalies or subpar goaltending kills the team when there is no D
Also the GM needs to make moves that makes sense
Fitz has been very smart with getting players like siegenthaler and Marino for cheap due to cap constraints and then making hockey trades like Meier and toffoli |

@LLysowski
Same lines and pairs for the Sabres at practice:
Skinner-Thompson-Tuch
Peterka-Cozens-Olofsson
Greenway-Mittelstadt-Benson
Girgensons-Krebs-Okposo
Dahlin-Samuelsson
Power-Jokiharju
Clifton-Johnson
Bryson, Jost and Savoie rotating in |

Clifton is exactly what the team needed on D and he showed that last night. The players that have already been here were the problem.
He makes 3.33 mil a year hes not the top 4 everyone was asking for but he sure shores up that 3rd pair.
Find Power a top 4 and all you need to round out the D are a solid defensive #6 and a better #7 than Bryson.

Right but the Sabres took that jump this past year with forwards exploding.
The next jump was supposed to come from D/goaltending and a few forwards taking another step |

Sabres also have there D high in most cases to, why they keep getting caught looking back. Joker got turned around on the 1st goal that way and didn't help Girgensons letting Panarin skate right past him at the Circle |

THE ATHLETIC: Cory Lavalette reported on Wednesday that Carolina Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell said his club is not actively trying to shop a defenseman. However, he said it’s his job to listen if a club comes calling. |

Clifton played well and they lost 5-1.
That’s the problem in a nutshell.
The big offseason acquisition isn’t a needle mover. At all - sbroads24
so...........................
we needed more than a tweak and an unknown goalie

I don't get it. They needed a top 4, so how is he exactly what they needed?

getting ryan johnson to sign instead of becoming a free agent was our best offseason addition on defense
