Most players drafted are mediocre (at best), as a general rule. Some are above average, and a few are stars.

Unless you get McDavid, you just never really know... you can hedge your bets and guess, but still a crapshoot. And some years, the top 10 ranked players are weak as (frank), compared to other years.

Given most of the players are similar-ish in talent, then I think it does come down to proper development in a lot of cases.

I mean, your drafting is a lottery ticket, sometimes you hit. But the development process is 100% in a team's control.

I think going 0/4 on their picks is pretty bad

Looks like they are going with a Newhook-Dach-Slafkovsky line.

I think this is a good call. I have been impressed with Newhook's speed in pre-season. Slaf seems to be getting more involved physically, and I think Dach continues to show progression.

Hope they stick with this line for more than just a few games / shift.

that would mean Monahan will center the 3rd line, and that one of Anderson or RHP plays with the dynamic duo.

as much as I would like to see some stability throughout the season, I also want to see guys being able to step up and fill in a role that comes with more pressure and responsibility, which is not only good for individual development but also for building chemistry between everyone, thus having more depth.

Current lines at practice:

Caufield-Suzuki-Anderson
Newhook-Dach-Slafkovsky
Pearson-Monahan-Gallagher
RHP-Evans-Ylönen

Until Dvorak returns, I think this is how things shake up.

Lindstrom was a fringe nhler on a bad wings team last year who was made expendable because Justin Holl. Of course he'd be put on waivers

it probably doesn't require a lot of effort either to take it down, this site is to the internet what the Arizona Coyotes are to hockey.

there's still time in front of them to become very good NHL players, but yeah there does seem to be a bit of a pattern there...

He's insinuating that the Habs hired a guy to run a complete rebuild filled with top-10 picks that fails at all top-10 picks, ergo...

I am not worried about moving other players around. And they likely will, based on who sits / plays and perhaps the opposition. I just really like the idea of that Newhook/Dach/Slaf line and want to see them get a 15-20 game go before thinking about breaking that up.

The picks were fine (I guess), given what was known then (or available).

The development of Laffy and Kakko (and the rest) was poop. But that is also on the same people.

Maybe they get their act together and become decent NHL players, who knows?

That is why I do not have an issue with Slaf going to spend time in the AHL (like CC did a few years ago) to help put things together, if he starts to falter at the start of the year.
