You have to get a #1 and #2 D before you get a #3 D.

Nah.

Disagree.

No need to build an all star team it’s a cap era.

Ya just a bunch of bottom pairing D should get the job done.

Because it's always worked before.

If you think Rielly, Brodie, Klingberg, and even Lily are bottom pairing d then you know nothing.

You just named 4 guys that are either barely average or significantly below average defensively. And those were the absolute best names you could muster while forgetting Giordano and McCabe, two even bigger defensive liabilities.

Rielly and Klingberg can score points but they can't shut down for poop.

Brodie and Giordano were exposed last year as slow and poor in the playoffs.

That leaves you with a young Liljegren and a pylon named McCabe.

I said this last year, the year before and I'll say it again; the Leafs D is bad and the goaltending isn't good enough to make up the difference.

The only way this team goes anywhere when the games matter is if they score a ridiculous amount of goals to make up for all the flaws, mistakes and holes defensively.

This.

Allowing five against the habs won’t transition well into games against far better teams. However I’m still willing to hope it’s simply due to being early in the season with a lot of new players.

Samsonov wasn't great but the D was on the hook for the majority of the goals. Giveaways, falling down, not lifting sticks, screening without moving bodies in front; the comedy of defensive errors was on full display against a lottery team.

Like I said, the D sucks and the goalie isn't good enough to make up for it.

The D could come around…. For some reason I see them as a slow groove into solid play. I think it will take a road trip.

I see the D as fundamentally flawed beyond repair without significant outside help.

I look forward to next year when Brodie, Klingberg and Giordano are all gone. And hopefully they realize McCabe is garbage and dump him too.

----2024/2025-----

Rielly (#2 offensive D at best) / #1 RHD (Need one REALLY bad)

#3 / #4 Two-way top-four D

Solid bottom pairing D that can't be exposed / Liljegren

----------

If we want the Leafs to win a Cup we have to look at previous winners.

Look at the Vegas blueline last year.

Look at the Colorado blueline the year before.

Look at Tampa Bay for two years in a row before that.

The Leafs blueline ain't even close. And their goaltending won't bridge the gap.

That's partly true, but not entirely true. Penguins got Karlsson. Say what you want about his defensive game but they got a RHD 100+ point scorer Norris winner. Top guys have become available many, many times before for a variety of reasons.

Rielly last year played great in the playoffs with Schenn as a balance on his right side. They were very stupid to not keep Schenn. But with the right guy beside him, Rielly might be elevated to become a #1.

The Leafs could acquire significant help by moving Nylander.

They could also sign one or two UFAs. 30+ million in cap space available.

And also, the trade deadline always makes somebody useful available for draft picks and prospects.
