D is soft in wall and in front of the net. Sammy in my opinion has not shown to be a legit NHL Starter and Woll is a big question mark still even with potential. I get tips/screens (d soft net front) but you still need a tender to make a save like that if they are to be considered a legit starter. Making the difficult ‘crazy’ save at the right momentum type time is what separates a good legit starters and just an nhl calibre goalie.

Last year, amongst NHL goalies with 40 or more starts, Sammy was:

5th best in sv%

2nd best in GAA

AND HE DID THAT WITH THE WORST DEFENCE IN THE LEAGUE!!!!

I swear to franking God, people are allowed to say whatever they want about the Leafs, with absolutely nothing to back it up other than, "yeah, I know the stats say something, but if you just watch them play..." and nobody says poop, because hey, it's fun to take pot shots at the Leafs.

How do the Jays compete with teams that are willing to go over 237M by as much as 100M?

Really?

I can't think of a song played at a Habs game that would truly cause problems.

Uhm

I am almost certain the habs played the leafs goal song for their 2021 playoff opener

Yeah, at no point somebody said hey maybe we should disqualify any tune with lyrics about drinking and driving? Impaired driving is (frank)ed in the head.
- Zezel

I'm sincerely hoping the Leafs issue an apology and change the song.

They literally played this song for their playoff opener.

Fire the team! Fire the staff! Ridiculous.

You are salty

You say you can't think of a song the Habs play in their arena like that.

I say they literally played the same damn song and you go away kicking and screaming like a little kid.

I realize I have gotten in your head but stop being so sensitive, its just sports.

You seem unusually sensitive today. Get trapped talking to Leaf bashers, or start down a Twitter thread?

Sammy was fantastic last year. One of the things I posted in here yesterday was that while we were 11th in HD shots against, we were 2nd in fewest HD goals surrendered. That was pretty much all Sammy. He was a highly touted prospect, but he hadn't really established himself. Last year he looked to do it - but I would also hesitate to call him established as a starter until he repeats the performance once.

I believe he can do it - which I have to admit I never fully did about Campbell. But I do think Jack Campbell is a better goaltender than Jack Campbell believes he is and that's ultimately the reason he'll never be who the Leafs wanted or Oilers want him to be.

This is still pretty damn good.

Also watching the game Sammy did not look like the 2nd best goalie in the NHL...I'd question the HD shots. Some HD shots are barely any danger at all.

What about his rebound control? Is Sammy creating more HD shots for himself?

Often injured. Never made the big save at the right time. GAA is a weird stat to out too much stock in - sv%to me is the big one. 5th is pretty good for sure.
It’s a saying since the beginning of time (hockey time ha) for a reason:
Big save right time. Sammy to me does not do that.
I was saying this when folks were ready to anoint Soupy as Roy 2.0 when he was in Toronto. Same issues. Inconsistent, health, and timely saves. Sammy will not start Game 1 of playoffs is my prediction. He would be a great tender of the leafs got a stronger more defensive dcore in front of him.

I get that it's the Toronto Maple Leafs so anything negative is a logical and fair argument, but let's look at a few facts, shall we?

Last year, 5 on 5, the Leafs gave up the 4th least amount of goals (Tampa was 16th).

Overall, the Leafs gave up the 7th least amount of goals (Tampa was 14th).

Now if we keep with a narrative we heard all last year - the Leafs' goaltending was terrible (certainly not as good as Tampa's), then how can we possibly explain the numbers above?

Please try to work the refs, Bettman and the NHL video review being conducted in Toronto into your response.

And happy Friday, Stonesie.

I just wanna stop seeing too many Bohemian clusterphucks in the d-zone. Not sure what fancy stat tracks those. I didn't realize the Leafs were 4th at 5v5 last season. That is pretty damn good. And, 14th for Tampa is generous because that was with Vasi cleaning up their messes.

I don't even want to get into Tampa's defense. It's gonna be a hot mess.

And thank god it's Friday!

We've gone over this. The Leafs have bad D, bad goaltending, soft forwards who don't play D, no depth and bad coaching. The reason their goals against was 5th best overall was because the NHL sucks.

Yeah, sorry, this is just nonsensical bullpoop.

The guy lets in less goals per game than every other goalie in the league except Linus Ullmark, but he's not a good goalie because he doesn't save them in the proper order?

Would it be better if he made the big save at the right time, but didn't make a save at an inconsequential time, even if it meant allowing the same amount of goals?

This is it basically.

They also draft horribly.

But when a young home grown kid plays well enough to get a shot we must bash it.

Their goals against may have been 5th best overall, but they didn't do it at the right time.

They suck, my pitcher-shaped friend.
