how are the jays supposed to compete with teams that spend money??!!??
- senstroll

Its no secret.

Jays can't compete signing Ohtani.

Very simple grade school math.

In New York they have a much bigger pie to give to their people to eat. Vladdy is going to be very hungry soon.

I would be very wary of signing Ohtani at this point.

100%.

Won't be able to pitch in a few years either, maybe even next year.

The Jays already don't have the money the yanks and dodgers have...And then they also have to pay him as a pitcher and a hitter even though he won't be able to pitch soon? That much money for a DH? No (frank)ing way. Makes the Jays a lot worse in the long run.

first, we dont now the number yet. Teams will adjust based on the info and how he will be playing.

The Jays do have the money, they may choose not to spend as much as other teams, but they could if they wanted to.

The Jays need a DH. i liked Belt and all..but someone better would be nice

We don't know the number but it will be massive. The Man could be 20M a year off from costing the entire payroll of the Rays.

With his pitching and hitting projections have him valued at as high as 70M...Very doubtful it goes that high now that we know his pitching days could be numbered.

Jorge Soler would be a much better DH for the price.

Soler 128 ops+ and 1.8 WAR
Ohtani 184 ops+ and 6 war

I get that they will come at very different prices, but you get 3x tha win value

Willy should be able to get 10 M somewhere, just not in Toronto.

I don’t care if he stays, but I think a legit top pairing Dman would be better for the team.

Ohtani isn't going to pitch for much longer at all.

Also sports science says his hitting will get worse much faster.

Its just not smart money spent whatsoever...unless every team is thinking the same but doubtful

Looking at the Penguins roster they are kinda sucky.

Too many stars are 37+.

Terrible bottom 6.

Even their top 6 guys like Smith and Rust are overrated.

Pens miss the playoffs again I think.

He won’t pitch next year but will be ready to hit for opening day. Depending on the confidence level about his being able to pitch effectively again, I’d be inclined to pay him a lot on a short term (3 year?) contract.

Agreed, one or two fastballs away from needing Tommy John.

Is this realistic?

You'd think he signs mega term.

Hire a new batting coach, hopefully one that has a better record as a hitter. 147 games in his minor league career with a .214 BA

Malkin

Letang turing 37 this season

Crosby is a youthful 36 and won't turn 37 until after playoffs

38 Carter waterskiing behind them

Solid deal.

A little long for a guy who's about to turn 30 years old but since the Avs are currently trying to compete for the next few years, it makes sense to want to secure a good defenseman like him.

In whatever scenario the Jays get outbid.

Unless he thinks playing in Canada would boost his brand enough but its just wishful thinking.

He probably does. This is more about what I’d offer from a team’s perspective. The short term $ would have to be a lot bigger

Agree, and he will probably get it - probably to the Dodgers or a west coast team with solid insurance coverage for when he goes on the DL for 2 years.

If a player is turning a certain age during the season thats what I call them for the year.

Letang will be 37 this season.

And its apples and oranges. 36, 37, 38 is all old as (frank) for a hockey player.

- Santo_44

Its already been reported he could open to boosting his brand in a 3rd country.
Jays can afford whatever.
Its just a matter of term and if they are willing to pull the trigger.
Also all depending on where ohtani wants to go.
Point is, its possible.
