Gonna be fun to see how Adams works through the next few years. Who stays and who goes.

A good chunk of money will be coming off the books in 2024-25, with presumptive departures from Erik Johnson ($3.25 million), Zemgus Girgensons ($2.5 million), Victor Olofsson ($4.75 million), Tyson Jost ($2 million), and Eric Comrie ($1.8 million). I’m assuming that Sabres’ captain Kyle Okposo extends past this season, but if he doesn’t, that’s another $2.5 million that can be used next season and beyond. Considering that the NHL salary cap is projected to increase to $87.5 million, this leaves the Sabres with just over $25 million in cap space after the raises for Dahlin and Power come in.

At this point it would be surprising if they didn’t resign all those players and give them raises.

Sooner or later you have to let players go, especially with the prospect pool the Sabres have. Adams can't keep kicking the can.
What if this year goes to sh!t, at what point do you say it's time to play some or the youth and try to get ready for next year. Not that I want this year to go to hell. But it things that need to be thought off.

For the 24-25 season, let's see who would be on the roster, between players already signed for next season, and prospects that will almost assuredly be ready (not indicative of lines below, just grouping the players for ease of reading):

Tage, Skinner, Tuch
Cozens, Quinn, Peterka
Benson, Kulich, Savoie
Krebs ($1.5M new deal), Greenway

Power, Dahlin
Samuelsson, Clifton
Ryan Johnson

Levi

The players above have a combined cap hit of $67M.

Mittelstadt and Jokiharju are key player questions re: contract extensions.

Not factoring those in, leaves roughly $20M in cap space for 3 forwards (1 roster, 2 bench), 3 defenseman (1 roster, 1 bench), and another goaltender.

Skinner will only have 2 seasons left on his deal, and Tuch will have one left.

They'll have the opportunity to do whatever they want with the roster, and bring in whoever they like, or make any trade they like, to shore up any position, but will they look outside the ORG to get the team to the next level?

Or will they extend both Mittelstadt and Jokiharju, fill out the 4th line by bringing back Zemgus and Kyle again, and only look at the bargain bin again for a bottom pair D and backup goaltender?

Your last paragraph says it all, how long does he kick the can.

I forgot about Greenway and Ryan Johnson too!

If you think Rosen will be ready too (he will), then you have 12 NHL roster ready forwards and 5 NHL roster ready defensemen.

I guess someone could say they don't believe all of Benson, Savoie, Kulich and Rosen will be NHL ready, but I don't know how that would be the case.

They would only have roster space for an extra forward or two, a defenseman, an extra defenseman, and another goaltender.

They could easily go safe and bring back some of the RFA's and UFA's and return mostly the same roster, while still having $10M or so in cap space, once again making them one of the cheapest rosters in the league.

Terry would love it!!

Bring Rasmus 2.0 to the Sabres.

Whatever it takes.

Would you include Samuelsson in the deal, if they were insistent, or would that be a deal breaker?

Loose samuelsson and you are back to Clifton / joke in the top 4 …. Sure Anderson might be an upgrade over samuelsson but your overall d is in the same spot

I agree, but Andersson is a very large upgrade over Samuelsson, at only slightly more of a cap hit.

Andersson is one of the league's best defenders.

No, that would not be a deal breaker. Think Ryan Johnson is gonna be better then Samuelsson anyway.

Pretty much, although that top pairing of Dahlin / Andersson would be pretty amazing.
Doesn't do anything for the 2nd pairing as you mentioned.

I'd rather get that long-term partner for Power. Is he in-house already, but a year or years away from joining? Maybe, but can they afford to wait? I say no, go make a trade to fill that hole...if a suitable top 4 RhDman emerges...wow, what a great "problem" to have.

I wouldn't want to use Samuelsson, but it wouldn't keep me from making the deal. Lot easier to find a top 4 than top 2. Maybe I am overzealous on Johnson but think he will fit nicely next to Power with his skating and zone exits and it will be sooner than later.

I get it and not arguing against it. I'd rather fill the void at 2 RhD and let Johnson mature at a slower pace...if he proves he can effectively play those minutes, what a great problem to have.

Joker should be included in any deal as I like Clifton on 3rd pairing...off to a slow start, but I think he'll come along.
