yes sir!

let me ask you this.
in a season where we all know they won't make the playoffs, that the important thing is kid's development (HuGo said so)...

what's the point of playing your backup as the #1G?

Allen is a back up. a good one, but a backup none the less. playing him as a #1 (like giving him the net again tonight, or giving him game 1 in TOR...) and eventually his numbers will decrease and he will get injured. we know that, we've seen that movie before.
add to that that he is not part of the future of this team, unlike Monty and Primeau who maybe could be. IF WE GIVE THEM THE NET!!!!

- fidopro

The team still sees Allen and Montembeault as splitting the load this season.

If Monty can't outplay Allen, whom you've described as a solid backup (which he is), then he won't get more than half the games, and that's fine.

It's on him to prove he's better and he'll get the games. If he can't, maybe he's not our guy moving forward anyway and you're giving your team the best possible chance to win every night.

I have faith in Montembeault, but I don't see how you take the net from Allen after last game.

but you don't give the net to a guy just because the other one has always been a backup throughout his career, it doesn't work that way, you still have to go by merit. not sure what's so frickin' hard to understand about this but oh well.
- Pat1993

by merit?!? so Slaf has a spot on the top6 by merit?
no, he's there because he is our future.
why a different approach for goaltending?

Slaf has played well enough to be there, I don't think you could say he stole his ice time from someone who deserved it more.

going in circles here.

Well...

Yeah?

I mean if Shesterkin doesn't play better than his backup every year, he's not gonna get all the starts is he?

If Slafkovsky gets outplayed by someone in the lineup, he's not gonna stay in the top 6 all season.

So far, he has looked ok/good enough to keep that spot but I'm guessing lines will shockingly change at some point during the season.

no, but he'll have the head start. he'll be consider the #1 until he drops the puck.
something Monty didn't have. I'm not comparing him to Shesterkin, but he did outplay Allen last year, not even close.

anyway, there's something we don't know here. even last year at camp, Allen was their #1, the coach said so, then we all thought Monty would be the backup. but no. they did open the door for Primeau to steal the backup spot. he failed, but they tried everything they could so he would. not fair for Monty at the time if you ask me.
and again this season, going with Allen for game 1 in TOR... not fair for Monty again after what he did last winter.
so that's why I'm saying there's something we don't know.
I hope Monty signs elsewhere tbh. he deserves better.

I think this is where you're putting too much emphasis, in your eyes because of last year Monty had become the undisputable #1 goalie for the habs, while for habs management, coaching staff and almost everyone else, he was on his way to establishing himself in that role, it wasn't and still isn't all that clear yet.

Well I feel like your conclusion is a little prematured but I understand where you're coming from as I also expected him to be seen as the guy that's ahead in the 1A/1B race.

This being said, Allen as a whole career of a good track record playing half the games, Montembeault did better than him last season.

I want to see him do it again, if he does, he's gonna stick around for a few years. If he doesn't, maybe they simply go another direction with Allen and Primeau/somebody else.

I have faith in Monty, he's gonna do it.

I hate to see them losing time on their march to become a good team again, missing on opportunities, managing kids (especially goalies) development poorly. playing Allen as your #1 is completely counter productive. full stupid even.

will do.
can't wait for the Habs to make the playoffs in 3-4 years with a 37 y/o Allen in net.
