Not a lot of options out there if you're looking for a quality defender with term and a reasonable cap hit that a team might move.
https://www.capfriendly.com/players/travis-sanheim
You're going to have to take a risk and either sign or trade for a quality player like Andersson or Dobson, and then do what every other quality team does: Figure out the cap as you go.
As Buf36 said, you can trade someone like Samuelsson, Jokiharju, or others to make it work.
It just means difficult decisions are necessary.

True, but not like you can't move a Samuelsson if Novikov develops and Johnson grows into a reliable Top 4. - Buff36

man that's a long out projection though.

Why if you were to say trade for Andersson, he has 2 more years left after this. I would hope Novikov has developed by then, and hopefully Strbak is in Rochester by then. And Johnson I would think you are finding that out over the next year. |

To fit a player like Andersson or Dobson, every one of Samuelsson or Jokiharju are going out the door, if needed, to make the necessary cap room.
You make room for top players like that, and focus on continuing to apparently draft well, while making sure you pick at least some defenseman, in drafts annually. |

Yes to trading for Andersson, and then figuring out the cap.
Time to stop (frank)ing around and being paranoid that the vision board plan might need to be adjusted, or gulp, accelerated. |

Yeah, I think your ideal candidate is a younger, middle of the road guy who can complement the strong transition players we have with own zone responsibility.

exactly the type of player we are missing up front - homiedclown
He was a gem down low on the PP. I liked the cat myself...glad to see he is doing well, especially early in the season as we was notably a slow starter...didn't show up normally until mid-January. |

How much better is this team if Samuelsson and Andersson switched?

Considering they have virtually the same cap hit, and one of the two actually plays most of the games? |

no. Doesn't need to be. I just believe the guy you're getting is, say... a quality, cost controlled two way defenseman.
