They got no cap space.

Gotta trade Willy who’s value will never be higher, ever, for the entirety of his career. Leafs need to turn that asset into a cornerstone D man. They have to. There’s no other option. That’s all they can do.

Marner. More space created.

They had more than 4m in cap space prior to signing Klingberg is what I'm saying. Why sign a guy that's been brutal for years to that contract?

10.9m & NMC good luck with that lol

Too bad Willy has no trade protection & always comes up as the elite trade chip. Need a coach who gets buy in to 200’ hockey from everyone. Team D.

I believe the goal was to get more scoring from the backend.

We've already covered this, dubas (frank)ed around and found out.
He made his own bed.
Shanny isnt out there skating around.

Wasn't really looking for your insight or validation, but that's where it started to go wrong. Regardless of what happened there and how it played out, a GM having to be in a spot where big decisions needed making instantaneously and a guy on the job for a couple few weeks prior to navigating free agency was never going to be good.

Surprise, it resulted in some patchwork moves and the team now looks like it was put together a guy who never had the opportunity to learn the team let alone figure out how to supplement it properly. Who could have possibly seen that coming...

I wouldn't say big time, 1 loss more thru 15 then last year....

- Buck Norris

Eh, it's much more than just the record. The stars having been playing great and are the only thing keeping the leafs winning any games at this point. They don't get any secondary scoring and can't stop the puck from going in their own net. If Matthews isn't scoring a hatrick each game, they aren't often winning. At least the last 2 years when they had rough starts they were actually still playing well and should have been winning more games than they had been.

More scoring from the backend isn't bad, but did they really need that? Reilly didn't have a great regular season but him just returning to regular form would have been a good addition to scoring from the backend.

I think I heard tonight that Klinberg has more than 15 goals against at regular strength this year already. More than a goal per game against at regular strength is not good.

The whole Dubas thing was a gongshow no question. That said we really dont know all of that so... Tre came in under crunchtime which was not ideal. Hasnt really made a lot of moves to make the team his. He went the status quo monitor it and assess route. Its not really working.

This point I think the big change is Keefe. Start looking at moves to shore things up best you can and absolutely fix D and goaltending.

Lost 5 of last 6. Need to do something here and soon.

I think you clearly have something with the top 9 but there are defensive shortcomings that need to be figured out even there.

Line 4 is a space taker at this point. No one will want those Reeves and Kampf contracts so GL with that.

The defence is a train wreck from top to bottom. Rielly has been real good since last playoffs for the most part and is signed long term so I guess you go from there? But deploying a blueline with a fading Gio and Brodie, Liljegren who's development has kind of flatlined, obvious glaring defensive issues in McCabe and Klingberg. Yeah don't see any part of it ever working...

And then there's goal.

So yes, I've long felt the coach is a problem and agree. But also, putting things on the right track seems to be so much more than that.

They don’t need that much space.

Marner probably deserves 12.5 x 8 rn.. but if he wins the scoring race this year he’ll get more. He’s just heating up now.

Dont disagree at all but in fairness how in the holy blue leafy hell is McCane supposed to play well anchored to Klank there too. NOBODY is going to be good with him.

Well, you need some insight once in a while.
But no, things have been going wrong for this for a while. Losing dubas wasnt the catalyst.
Tree wasnt going to fix them in one off season.
He took a shot on some players, some havent worked out
But it hasnt even been 20 games yet, too early for conclusions on the signings. But two arent looking good

As absurd as it sounds, I would actually like this team to nosedive for the next 5-10 games to force Tree's hand on Keefe.

Gotta pay your best players.

Caps going way up once Willy gets moved, Marner should get any disposable income they have. Give him the same as Matthews, I’m fine with that.

Maybe a tad. But he performed.

Leafs have been plagued by bad coaching and management. Should’ve never hire Dubas, or Shanny for that matter. Those two (frank)ed the cores best years trying to play flag hockey in the NHL

Why?

In what world is a winger worth 12.5m who has never won a cup or dragged a team along?

AM is the only star worth his contract after Willy for a bargain.

I can appreciate your I know everything gimmick and the arrogance you're farming it out with, but you frequently display how little you know to the point that it's an odd flex. Isn't it still baseball season?

Have your opinion, it's a great thing. That doesn't make it fact. There's a million opinions on here I'd defer to for confirmation of what's right and wrong well before yours.
