Guy Boucher is ready try a new defensive scheme with the Leafs. Both defensemen put on goalie pads and stay to the left and right of the goalie in the crease, thus creating a wall of three goalies.
Problem solved.
Plan the parade.

At least his actual salary is only 2M and with 13 games in its only going down by the day.
Lily will be out a long time and with his injury I am not expecting anything above sheltered 3D or press box injury guy for playoffs.
Timmins and McCabe coming back should slide Klingberg right out. - Santo_44
McCabe coming back moves him to 3rd pair and they’ll see from there. If he can be only minimally bad with Gio or someone, they won’t have to waste an asset to move him and can use trades to plug other holes. |

Oh I know. The move was always to keep Schenn and let Holl walk. - fifty__missions
Holl and Schenns contracts suck.
2.75M for 1 year for Schenn would have been great.
3.4M for Holl on a 1 year would even be close to fair value.
Schenn is a 3rd pairing 34 year old D signed for 3 years...love the guy but its a dumpster of a signing and its not a contract you can get out of.
Klingberg has 1.8M of actual salary right now...even with him being AHL caliber right now its movable.
If anything we should be angry they didn't sign Gustaffson but Keefe didn't like playing him for some reason, which was odd. |

If Lagesson is your #9 dman, yes your depth is fine
Conveniently, you left out the 2nd part of the comment |

Yeah it does take a lot of the fun away.
They need a purge year every 10 years where there's no salary cap, teams get to spend whatever they want.
The Arizonas and Florida's run and hide for the year and the Torontos and New Yorks (frank) poop up. |

Timmins, Lil and McCabe being hurt doesn't help.
If its Klingberg hurt instead of McCabe I think the Leafs have a few extra wins in the last 6 games.

D Max Lajoie has been loaned to the Marlies.
Reaves is for sure sitting.
Also was always probably going to be a thing bringing Holmberg to Sweden. |

I saw this comment and thought: You don't protect a $4m defenseman. They are supposed to provide value.
And then it sort of hits me . . . they say Dubas wanted Karlsson but Shanahan squashed it. We had Gustafsson, who Keefe refused to play.
So Treliving and Shanahan go get Klingberg - who is basically the same as either of Karlsson or Gustafsson. An offensive player who isn't good on defense.
If Keefe didn't want to play Gustafsson, why would he want Klingberg? How do you look at a defensive group with Rielly, Brodie, Giordano, Liljegren, Timmins, McCabe and think, "You know what that group needs? A guy who can't play defense that the other guys who already can't play defense will have to insulate and protect!"
This isn't all on Klingberg - the absence of McCabe, Liljegren and Timmins have pushed up Benoit and Lagesson, who are tweeners are best. But it's exposed Klingberg more, and his piss poor play is on full display whenever the puck enters our zone regardless of the level of competition he faces.
If you want to protect Klingberg - put him in the pressbox.
On a last note: I don't feel for Keefe because if Treliving is to be believed, he was a part of this decision. They had conversations about what he needed and what his vision was and so on - and Treliving bought in enough to extend him and presumably get him the pieces he was looking for. But if that's the case, why didn't he play Gustafsson more? I am confused by all of it! - Monkeypunk
I never understood why we didn't use him.
FFS, I get he's not great on one side of the puck, but if Washington could figure out how to utilize him, and now the Rangers are giving him 18 minutes a night, why the frank couldn't we use him more? |

I went through this same thought process. I put myself in Tree's position and took at look at the summer signings ....there was (frank) all out there on the open market in terms of top 4 defensive blue liners. Ian Cole? Mayfield signed for 7 years! Schenn got 3 x 2.75 (love him but that won't age well). Holl 3 x 3.4 ...
I think he signed Klingwrap b/c it was that or nothing. In hindsight I would have preferred the later or even toss that money at Ian Cole ...i guess.
I think he targeted Bertuzzi and Reaves. But the others - it was probably too quick/soon to really get a trade organized so he stuck some bandaids where he could (Domi and Klingberg). - The Law
I don't know if Graves wanted to go to Pittsburgh, but he would have been a priority for me if I were a GM.
