So one of the best 5 players in the world gets an overrated goalie with an 896sv% with a worse contract than Campbell giving them $11M in contracts between the 2. A prospect not good enough to stay up with the Flames, and 2 salary dumps who's contracts end this season. No picks, no top prospects. No thanks. - wreckage
almost all of the suggestions posted so far are laughable...
I dont think this would ever happen. they are crazy if they trade him away but:
He is 28, making 8.5M/yr, averaged more than a point per game for the last 6 years, is signed for this year and next. Oilers have only $21k in cap space so its dollar in, dollar out.
If i am Ottawa, i am sending:
Matthieu Joseph ($3M), Kubalik ($2.5M-expires this yr), Erik Brannstrom ($2M)
1st round pick this yr (the higher of the 2 they have)
4th round pick this yr
2nd round pick next yr
Gives Edmonton an expiring winger, a winger under contract for 3 seasons and a 24 yr old NHL defenseman who was drafted 15th overall in 2017. Gives $1M in cap space back too.
Ottawa gets a guy that has missed less than 20 games in the last 4 years. He can play with Stutlze again for years. clears up log jam at D when Chabot comes back.
Calling on an old trade partner, Draisitl is used to solve terrible mistakes and trying to recoup as much in the near term…
To Ducks: C Leon Draisitl - $8.5M
D Darnell Nurse - $9.25M
G Jack Campbell - $5.0M
~ $23M Cap Moved
To Oilers: G John Gibson - $6.4M
D Cam Fowler - $6.5M
C Adam Henrique - $5.825M (UFA Pending)
RW Jakob Silfbverg - $5.25M (UFA Pending)
LW Brayden Tracey - ELC (Former 1st Rd. Pick)
D Drew Helleson - ELC (Former 2nd Rd. Pick)
2024 2nd/Boston + 2024 3rd/Pittsburgh
2026 1st* (Conditional On Draisitl Extension, otherwise becomes a 2nd Rd. Pick)
Edmonton gets financial freedom, some futures, some pieces to deal at the TDL for more futures or to use in hopes of sneaking into the dance (though if you’re dealing Leon the white flag has to be waved). You get a better LD1, a true G1, which solves two massive issues for the forseeable, and you’ve gained $11.075M in Cap Room to screw the roster up with in the coming offseason.

Math isn't a strength for you is it? Edmonton would move out 22.75M and take on
23.975M if your numbers are in fact true, and that's just based Gibson, Fowler, Silferberg, and Henrique. The Oilers don't have the extra 1.25M to lose EASILY the best player in the deal and provide no long term improvement. Not to mention Gibson is no longer a "true G1" anymore, Fowler isn't any better than what they have and won't get the PP1 time with Bouchard there to have his stats as stacked, Henrique doesn't move the needle as he would not improve the current team, Silvferberg could be a useful piece with whom the Oilers have at RW. The rest is just useless filler. Unless the picks are changed to 2 firsts the deal gets hung up on.

While yes my on the fly math was off slightly, I think one could easily assume Anaheim capable of retaining $1.25M somewhere to make it work. And compared to the crease in Edmonton currently, the Ghost of Manon Rheaume's NHL Career is a legit G1, so Gibson is definitely an upgrade there. And right, Henrique, Silfbverg, give you a chance to collect some playoff revenue instead of totally bottoming and then you've got nearly $11M just from their contracts expiring to attack the offseason with. And Fowler's benefit is in the much shorter term and lower cap number while being more effective than Nurse. Fowler, a player someone may actually want, at a relatively affordable hit and two years after this is a much better lot to lie in than one with otherwise cringe statistic Nurse at 9.25 til essentially a date with a buyout.
Fowler could run PP2. And the reason those picks are a 2nd and a Conditional 1st is because the deal isn't contingent on a Draisitl extension, and because the dead weight assets tied to him would require 3 1st's at minimum to offload them by themselves.
And while Tracey is a lotto ticket coin flip, Helleson is a legit 2nd pairing RD prospect on a team dressing Desharnais nightly, so, prob best to assess what got Edmonton into this mess in the first place (poor prospect assessment and development) before citing futures as both useless and filler lol.
