Probably more to do with a failing Atlanta team, no viable alternatives in the US for relocation, and Canada's richest man saying he's willing to lose gobs of money on the team.

Oh, and IIRC, he was dating Sarah McLachlan at the time, who was really rocking the "I'm not trying to look hot, which makes me all the more hotter" look.

The average value of NHL franchises increased by 29% over the last year. Even the Coyotes increased by 45% to $650M. The Jets showed the smallest increase (15%). All the stuff that goes with owning a team, especially real estate is going to increase in value. All you have to do is not lose too much year-to-year. Winning isn’t essential.

#LeafsForever  prospect Easton Cowan with 3 secondary assists, all on the powerplay. He's up to 8 goals and 27 points in just 14 games. That should bump him up into the top 5 of the OHL points leaderboard with the highest point per game pace.

I wondered why they picked him so high, kinda making sense so far.

- Santo_44

I've been told that secondary assists don't actually count.

Sportico. It might not be too high. The value they set for the Habs, for example, is less than the sale value when Andlauer sold his stake so he could buy the Sens.

I'm calling bullpoop on the Coyotes numbers.

There's no justification for it increasing that much in value, unless someone is saying that the collapse of their arena plans makes them an attractive property for purchase and relocation.

They are #32 in every category.

To be fair these numbers are matching up with the crap I’ve seen on the twitter, generalized links, etc.

I guess this even makes my question more curious, what caused Atlanta’s collapse?

If I was GM, I'd give him $2M X 2 all franking day long.

This is a no brainer.

I loved Kane in his prime - and I do realize that he's just two years removed from 92 points in 78 games - but I would be concerned about his hip. Last year's plummet to 57 in 73 (still worth more than $2m for the record) would concern me if it's not recovered.

He's 35 years old and listed as 5'10 and 177lbs. If he isn't as dynamic of a skater, he'll be nobody. From the Leafs perspective - he's an offensively gifted player who has been keeping up appearances on the power play more than 5v5.

In 5v5 scoring over the past 4 seasons, he has gone from 4th to 8th to 19th to 103rd in league scoring.

I wouldn't give him more than 1 year and I wouldn't be paying him for who he was - I'd be paying for who I'm afraid he is now.

Let someone else overpay.

I'm more than happy to take a gamble, considering he only sucked last year when he was injured.

Popular sport #4 just doesn’t want to work in Atlanta I guess. Both the Flames and Jets are from there… if Canada wants another team does it have to start there?

Exactly what I’m saying, the leafs and habs get decent viewership because they’re original six teams, Vancouver did well but it’s died off since they gave Seattle a team. Also willing to imagine the leafs are bumped up a bit due to having an American superstar.

However your argument regarding maximizing viewership isn’t too big a deal for Canada. Leaf fans will still watch the games at 2pm and 8am without the league even trying to promote it. US teams however are likely getting pushed with hopes it will work.

Bettman isn’t stupid, he knows the “safe” money comes from Canada, but the opportunity for “massive” earnings lies in the states. I’m still willing to bet the Winnipeg only got their team back because the league wanted a Canadian team in the central time zone. That way the only time zone in Canada without a team is the Atlantic, and that area simply isn’t populated enough to support one.

They key is landing the massive American TV deal.

Th only team I see overpaying is the Sabres.

Wouldn't be smart for showtime to not go to a team that is a lock for playoffs.

The Leafs offer is you are close to family, you can have 1M, play with Domi on the 3rd line and PP2 time.

Probably unlikely he chooses that but the fact the Leafs are an 2 hours away from family will always be something they have over Dallas and Florida.

Domi has played well the last 6 games.

Players take time to adjust sometimes, leafs nation needs to stop freaking out over 10 games.

Kane and Domi played well together last year, even with his injury.
