Kane was great offensively. But as an overall player, he's always been a liability defensively. I'd put Modano, Hull, Leetch, and Chelios as better overall American NHL players. I'd also be very skeptical on the surgical procedure he just had done as Backstrom is likely done for his career and couldn't skate anymore when he tried to come back.
