This made me laugh, I love All In The Family. I just want to point out that Panarin is one example where his offensive numbers were better in Columbus than in Chicago.

how did they underachieve? what are you using to quantify that?

Nothing to support your claims or back up your opinion

- hello it's me 2050

lmao. in the playoffs in order...they lost to Pitts, Wash, Bost, and Tampa.

would love to see how someone can justify the Blue Jackets roster being superior to any of these teams at the time.

With a team that has G, Vorack, Simmonds and Schenn in their primes and Couts a rising star, getting to the playoffs 2 out 4 season is an absolute disgrace! And you have the audacity to come on here this morning to call me uninformed and Columbus under Torts underachieved!?! Columbus made the playoffs more times that the Flyers did, and actually won a playoff series! What a series of dumb statements you have made. Quick embarrassing yourself.
- jd250

Yes, you're actually uninformed when stating that Hextall bought a culture of losing to the team and Tortorella a culture of winning. When Hextall teams actually made the playoffs and Tortorella has done zero winning as the coach of the Flyers.

The context of the conversation was about the difference between Flyers years under Hextall versus Tortorella and this magical fantasy of culture and standard that you've been brainwashed on. Not the difference between Columbus under Tortorella and Flyers under Hextall. Speaking of embarrassing yourself.

To be fair it is not an apples to apples comparison since Hextall was here 4+ seasons and Tortorella only 1+ season.

You really have no idea that when you're telling someone else they're embarrassing themselves, your making a huge fool of yourself, do you?

LOL, yea I know what he said. I know what you said also. Learn what the context is.

This new schtick you have of throwing out insults is not going to work for you.

This Panarin argument is so disingenous. He wins the Calder in Chicago as a rookie.

To attribute that he scored a few more points than he did as a rookie in his 3rd and 4th seasons with Columbus to Tortorella is just silly. If anything, Torts stifled his goal scoring. That STATS say so!

Then he realized he needed to get the phuck away from Torts and goes to the Rangers.

Torts was a passenger in Panarins career.

i'm not saying torts is the best coach. but he had the blue jackets in the playoffs the majority of the time he was there. before he got there, the majority of the time they missed the playoffs. he was hired in 2015, gone in 21. As a coach he has the win record for Columbus.

I dont blame Jorts for the BJs failures at all. I think he did a good job in Clb. The main reason for their success and ultimate failures was the play of BOB

I see nothing about how the flyers play that would stifle offensive players. I like how they play on the ice. I don’t like the unnecessary mind games
- Just5

You don’t see anything because there is not anything. You want to get in to Torts bad graces?

1) don’t follow the system
2) Lazy coverage in the your own end, don’t move your feet
3) do not get into the shooting lanes in your own zone
4) turn puck over in inopportune places.

Nothing stifles creativity…If being responsible to the team game is seen as a bad thing I’m not sure what say.
I agree that some of his methods rub me the wrong way, but after watching this team float through games for a few years for long stretches I’m glad they brought a guy in that was going to hold that horse poop accountable.

hextal was the gm, not the coach.

during his time here hakstol lost in the first round twice, missed the playoffs once and was fired his 4th year. (they missed the playoffs that year as well.)

Unfortunately, Laczynski is now a tweener. He is just beyond the youth phase, but not old enough (and too skilled) for a Flyers 4th line player.

You got it! Been to Oh Canada many times and enjoyed it. It's meant in a positive way of course! And no, I'm not Canadian, but they use the term frequently.
- Phillywhiteout

I’ve been to Canada too, but never really noticed people saying “eh what”. I’ve heard a lot of people ending sentences with “eh”… meaning “right” or “don’t you think”, but not “eh what”. Kind of sounds like a catch phrase for a character in an 80’s English comedy, but figured since we’re talking hockey it must be referencing Canada.

That's mostly true but there is this fantasy narrative out there that Tortorella is this magical coach who lifts teams up. Reality is that he has only taken one team past the 2nd round of the playoffs in his last 16 years as a coach. His teams have lost in the first round in 7 out 9 times in that span and missed the playoffs 6 times.

his first 5 years his stats did increase yes. but would also expect them to be better playing with better players as well. He signed with NYR as a free agent. A team known to attract certain players as they have a great market. It was also rumored other teams offered him more. reports had Isles offering 13 mil a year.

as you brought up disingenuous, do you have any proof he only left due to torts being there?

Why would linemates affect scoring right…and he left because he only wanted to play in New York.

They offered him a good deal. I think it was a little less than what the Rangers offered but with the tax difference, it was close. It was basically the Rangers all the way. Columbus made him a bigger offer to stay I believe but that didn't matter.

In don't think he's the devil. I think his style of play is too conservative and too far over to the defensive side of things. Not geared enough towards puck pressure and defending zone entries. His breakout strategy is too focused on strong side wall plays and he doesn't use weak side plays or activate the weak side defenseman enough. Doesn't use strategies and breakout plays that create ice space and speed through the neutral zone to back off defenders and create enough rush plays and clean zone entries. On the PP, his breakout schemes are optionless for the puck carrier with no speed options for the PK defenders to be concerned about. Once the puck is set up, there doesn't seem to be a definitive strategy on what they're trying to do. Such as creating mini 2 on 1's with puck movement or setting up a one timer with puck movement or consistently getting the puck to the bump forward. I was encouraged by the PP goals they scored against Vegas. Where shots were directed at the net with traffic and they had some slot opportunities for goals. I think with the talent level the Flyers have. This is probably the best approach that I have been advocating for.
I think Tortorella's 2-2-1 spread forecheck is fine. I think the Flyers in zone defense and the PK is improved from last year. They are more aggressive on the puck. I still think they need to have a more aggressive element to their low zone collapse defense such as what Boston does with a roving center. Or what Trotz did when he was coaching with the idea that they wanted to force the puck away from the middle and towards the boards so they can jump and outman a puck carrier to regain possession.
