Zach Benson deserves to be a Sabre. We’re two appearances away from burning a year off his ELC.
There are extenuating factors that will weigh into the #Sabres’ decision as to whether he stays with the big club, or returns to the WHL.
My latest at xB:
https://www.expectedbuffa...-zach-benson-looms-large/
>>> Sounds like an easy decision, right? The franchise is flirting with a 13th-consecutive season without a playoff berth, and a team in that position should be most concerned with icing its best roster. At least you would think so.
>>> Sadly, the decision isn’t as straightforward as it should be. There are extenuating factors that will play a role in the decision. We’ll touch on those shortly. Let’s start by taking a look at where Benson has provided positive impacts early, and why sending him back to the WHL would be indicative of a team that feels insufficient urgency to end the league’s longest-active playoff drought.
>>> ***Closing Thoughts***
Simply put, the Sabres are out of excuses when it comes to icing their best roster on a nightly basis. The argument for prolonged development at the expense of victory isn’t a luxury that can be afforded to a franchise in its position.
>>> A healthy portion of this article could be applied to Ryan Johnson too. Hopefully, he doesn’t become a victim of roster space on the back end, because he’s played like a bonafide top-four defenseman to date. Again, veteran loyalty to a struggling Erik Johnson plays a factor here.
>>> If either player is sent down shortly (to facilitate a Kane acquisition or otherwise), it would represent a clear indictment of either the organization’s sense of urgency as a whole, or even more concerning, their ability to assess NHL-readiness. |

Florida, Detroit and the Sabres are the 3 teams, but belief is Kane does not want a one year deal at a low number, which would mean Florida is likely out.
If Kane wants a multi-year deal, Adams won't be outbid, no matter how foolish it would be.
>>> It seems like certain teams in the Atlantic Division are heavily interested in Patrick Kane.

Going to be wild if they keep Benson past 9 games, only to send him back in January when Kane, Quinn and Tage are all ready. |

Hope they don’t, he deserves to be here.
I still can’t believe he fell to us at 13.

The fact he couldn’t get an AHL exemption because he was born 1 day earlier still pisses me off.
He was playing well in the AHL and would have been much more beneficial then globe trotting the WHL for the third straight year |

I've got them at 14 forwards if they keep Benson, sign Kane, and the rest are healthy.
Key decisions would need to be made.
- Waive Olofsson?
- Waive Bryson?
- Waive/Send a goaltender to Rochester?
- Play Greenway on the 4th line?
- If they keep 3 goaltenders, will they waive Jost?
>>> Tage, Skinner, Tuch, Cozens, Peterka, Quinn, Mittelstadt, Benson, Kane, Krebs, Greenway, Zemgus, Okposo, Jost |

Just hope Kane picks another team. Buffalo should not be his first choice, unless it's all about money and he's afraid UFA next summer. The more he pushes for multi-year, the faster I'd run away.

What Benson did in his draft year, and the fact he’s not only stuck in the NHL at 18 but has driven positive play results, I’d be shocked if he doesn’t end up being a high end top 6 forward.
I’m not one for player comparables but the sky is the limit for him.

Strong end to the year and a great world championships.
The signs were there for a breakout season, and I think his potential still gets undersold due to his draft status of not being a top 15 pick.
If a guy like him is on your third line when it’s all said and done here, this team will be competing for cups for a long time |

His potential is always going to viewed lower because he isn't exceptional in any particualr area. It's not a rip on him, Pomminville was similar in a lot of ways. |

I think Pominville is the measuring stick. Similar build, look, game.
Except Peterka has looked very fast this season. That dude’s hustle is admirable.
I admit I wasn’t that high on him until the first game this season and I was like ah ok watch out for him…
Nice to be wrong. |

This should be an irrelevant measuring tool. Draft position, any value related to it becomes meaningless the moment the draft is over. It's pure entertainment value.
