The problem with all that is that it sounds great in theory, but how many teams out there meet all of the following criteria:

- Have a quality goaltender that they're willing and able to trade
- Same, but for a defenseman
- Have the cap space to accommodate Nylander's current cap hit in the short term
- Have the cap space to accommodate Nylander's next contract
- Are in a position to make a trade for a player like him right now
- Are a team that Nylander would be willing to sign an extension with

There really isn't anyone that I think would check all those boxes. You could probably eliminate the entire rest of the Atlantic division right off the bat.

I agree it won't be easy to find dance a partner to make the right trade... you make some good points. Things could change as the season goes on though... I think the cap space issue is what will hinder the trade more than anything. Also wonder how much money he's going to demand and how flexible he'd be.

his team lost to the Leafs in Sweden and he's still bitter over it.

No, not bitter... those type of games are a good test to see where Detroit is at in their rebuild. My opinion is neutral and even though you seem to lack the reading comprehension skills to see that after reading what I posted ... then carry on.

still bitter eh!

yeah the Leafs do need some work but saying they are going nowhere in the playoff is as you say it "not having the mental capacity" that changes can occur before the playoffs start.

80.5M over 7 years vs 84M over 8 years.
To make up the difference his next contract would only have to be 3.5M (same total amount over 8 years). You really think he won't be able to get that? Or a LOT more?

By 2031, players scoring 55 points will be signing AAVs for 7M. WN will have no problem getting a contract like that at age 34 unless his production falls off a cliff.

We'll have to agree to disagree on the 8th year having a big impact, or not, on lowering the AVV

So a team with (a) the financial means (b) cap space and (c) supporting cast offers WN $84M ($12M aav for 7years). Are you telling me that if the leafs don’t want to lose WN for nothing can’t counter offer $84M plus another $7M for year #8 (because Nasty Duck feels that what he may be worth at age 35)….for a total of $91M at an aav of $11.3? Are you telling me that WN turns down $91M because the aav is not as good as $12M???
Cmon now!

This is why the 8th year is critical. WN gets his bag and Leafs can get their guy at a lower aav. But in no way is WN basing his negotiations primarily on aav because that would be short-sighted

If your statement was that Leaf’s management is negotiating from an aav perspective then you have me in agreement.
