I'm not even listening to Overdrive, but I'm going to guess: O'Dog is talking about how Nylander and the Leafs have a great storybook trip to Sweden and afterwards all anyone can talk about is how they won't be able to afford Willy and it's a big problem. Nobody takes time to enjoy it, and that's why we can't have nice things.

Oh the other possibility with O'Dog is he's making allusions to binge drinking. The over-under on that with him is 5 minutes into the show. |

In fairness, if he wasnt so injured, he might be a good player again. Never good to see an injury, but as you said, at this point, the Leafs could use the cap space. - Archaic
For sure. For the Leafs and Treliving, it looks better on them if his poor play has been due to injury, rather than just deterioration as a player. Also as you say they get cap relief from an injury, but not poor play.

I hate to see a guy with injuries like that, but if you're the Maple Leafs it's not the most inconvenient injury that could've happened. - Zezel
As a Maple Leaf it's pretty much guaranteed that if you aren't as good as hoped you will be inconveniently injured. |

Whats it about? - Fakepartofme
About the Insiders guys reporting that "rival execs" see Nylander making; "no less than Pastrnak and maybe upwards of $13M".
And O'Dog says "what the hell are we talking about here? This 'Leafs pay more' thing is getting out of hand." (paraphrase)
EDIT: Also brought up Tkachuk in Florida's contract and others. |

I mean players are protected in these contracts.
Playing injured in this market isn't exactly fun either...Murray chose surgery and to take the year off.
Could he have played? Probably.
Was the better option to get fully healthy instead of playing injured all year in a fish bowl environment? 100%.
This market doesn't care if you are injured, they will chew you up and spit you out regardless. |

Crazy how avoiding contact at all times can lead to a career with few missed games.
Doesn’t really seem to be a formula for success tho. All the greats were at least somewhat physical. - Arctic_AARDVARK

Of course rival execs say that trying to drive Nylander's agent's price up to screw the leafs.

That's part of what the boys were talking about, too.
Like, yeah, of course other teams want to see more ridiculous overpays. Their opinions are irrelevant, since they're praying on the Leafs (and every team that's not their team) downfall. |

I think it's tougher for us fans.
But really it's pretty simple. In the summer the Leafs had him grouped into that second tier elite forward category (Meier, Larkin, Barzal, Forsberg) - 8.5 - 9. Willie took a pass and bet on himself. So far it's paying off.
This year (small sample) he's playing above that level and looks more like Panarin or Pasternak ...guys making $11M+. Panarin got a 7 yr deal and left town to get it so that numbers inflated over an 8 yr.
I don't know if Willie can demand Pasta $$? If the Leafs put ($80M) 8 x 10$ on the table I don't see Willie leaving town for $80M over 7 years.
Would a team break the market and pay Willie 7 x $12 to get him to leave? I don't think so but ....maybe. - The Law
10 per is not going to get it done I think. |

You know what, I am just gonna say it... It would be a mistake to trade Nylander or let him walk.
Caveat : unless the trade offer is absolutely lopsided.
If Artemi Panarin is worth $11.6m per, then that's probably about what Willy is gonna get. Just chew on that and get used to the taste. Just don't give him a damn NMC.
