Win now or nah?
- drexel

Trust me I’m on win now … because my primary squad has definitely got a longer-term view

I just think you try and make the trade without Willy…

i’d offer 44 & 89 and see what they say- Throw a 2nd in there if you have to-

Offensive defenseman who does not play physical with a cap hit of 9 million until age 38/39 is probably not a great investment.

All the other teams players are better and 100% complete two way players with no mistakes. Only the leaf players are human and have holes in their games.

That’s why you trade Marner and Nylander for Pronger. Er. Trouba

Lots of talk about Marner not meeting expectations so far this year.

Kind of interesting though that there's not a lot of chatter about Matthews' slump.

Held pointless in 6 of the last 8 games which he's scored 1 goal and 2 assists.

Edit. 5 of last 7 games.

Matthews is infallible around here.
Its only ever marners fault.

😆
Yeah, it must be a conspiracy

We’ve all agreed to give preferential treatment to the Mexican American player and pick on the hometown kid. I’m sure it has nothing to do with on-ice performance, the eye test or top hat wearing female dogs.

What a joke

Yeah, but that's only because AM34 is awesome and Marner sucks.

Once Marner signs his next contract at a team friendly amount, he'll be great again.

It's ultimately based on what they are capable of. When you slump offensively - and most guys do - it's about what you're bringing to the table to contribute in the meantime. Matthews is winning his battles, playing decently (but he's been better) in his own zone and he has been moving the puck well through the neutral zone.

Marner is a smarter, more explosive and more dynamic player than we've seen in most games this year. He's not going to out muscle you for the puck, but he reads plays well, picks up pucks, and skates well enough to get away from the pack and create room for himself. His defense is more based on his positioning, closing his gaps wisely and reading the plays around him. He's struggling with it at the moment, so his whole game isn't consistent and that's why he's the target.

That said they are both struggling offensively and they are both trying to force plays that aren't there, or do things that have a very low chance of success which lead to turnovers against. In the Pittsburgh game I think I watched Matthews unsuccessfully try and lone ranger it through 3 Pens on at least 2, if not 3, occasions.

Marner has been holding the puck too long and waiting until he's almost cornered to throw a desperate play out. Is he not skating enough, wily enough, reading the play quickly enough, or still not used to his left wing support's (Knies typically) positioning? I don't know, but we see it more and more as he gets more and more frustrated.

Those two are at their best when they are skating and making quick short passes and they also seem to be more spread out on the ice this year than in previous years. There seems to be a lot to work on that can improve it.
