Only 3 teams in the league have less regulation wins than the Leafs (5):

Minnesota (4)
Chicago (4)
Montreal (3)

San Jose has 5.

Glad Kane went to Detroit - now we don't have to listen to people talk about wanting him as a Leaf.

IMO Toronto never needed a P. Kane, they have a younger version in Marner (yes with no cups).

They need help on D, both scoring from the back end but also more nasty/clear the front of the net and make other teams pay the price for being in front or taking a late poke at the goalie etc.

Yup.
Leafs couldn't afford him anyway ($2.75m) without hurting their ability to improve the D. Dont need another forward right now. Imo.

I would have liked him at 2M or less.

Red Wings were the only team that could overpay and have a half decent chance at playoffs.

Might not see Kane in playoffs...but probably the best place to rack up some points and get a decent contract again.

I dare say we have surely invested enough $ already in skilled forwards at the expense of other glaring weaknesses in this lineup.

Management plus the "big four" are getting exactly what they signed up for: a poopload of $ for themselves and mlse, along with a piecemeal roster.

And a segment of the fanbase just can't help themselves from lapping up the MLSE gravy train.

"Nice things" indeed, but ultimately....it's just the same poop, different season.

Sadly the big 3 (let’s call them) care most about money.

Nobody can make any sort of argument that Auston, Mitch, and Willy care more about winning, than getting every last penny they can.

But it’s not their fault. Dubas cultivated this culture of “me first.” You don’t have to move any of the big 3, but you won’t change the culture unless you do.

It’s almost tragic when you really think about it. No team represents failure more than the Leafs. The Yotes maybe, but that’s not the same, nobody cares about them. They had an opportunity to tank and rebuild. It started off great, but once they hired Dubas the whole culture changed and it became this country club atmosphere where the top players get all the attention and money, while the rest of the team gets ignored. For 8 years this model failed. Dubas didn’t even get fired because they stunk the joint out again, he got fired because he got greedy and tried to strong arm Shanny lol. Dubas thought he could get away with it. Again, culture.

I get it, I’m a boss. I have to give ppl poop and say no a lot. I have to be the bad guy for the sake of the company. I feel like Dubas wasn’t this, and if he was they didn’t respect him because he’s young and inexperienced, and the fleeced him on their contracts.

Dubas may have cultivated, but ultimately Shanahan allowed it and even extended it into Treliving's term before he even hired him by calling all four and telling them they were all coming back. Treliving is nothing more than Shanahan's puppet.

Before all these deals were even signed by Dubas Shanahan spoke a few times about being a Red Wing and "taking less". It never happened, and has absolutely crippled this team.
