Sadly the big 3 (let’s call them) care most about money.
Nobody can make any sort of argument that Auston, Mitch, and Willy care more about winning, than getting every last penny they can.
But it’s not their fault. Dubas cultivated this culture of “me first.” You don’t have to move any of the big 3, but you won’t change the culture unless you do.
It’s almost tragic when you really think about it. No team represents failure more than the Leafs. The Yotes maybe, but that’s not the same, nobody cares about them. They had an opportunity to tank and rebuild. It started off great, but once they hired Dubas the whole culture changed and it became this country club atmosphere where the top players get all the attention and money, while the rest of the team gets ignored. For 8 years this model failed. Dubas didn’t even get fired because they stunk the joint out again, he got fired because he got greedy and tried to strong arm Shanny lol. Dubas thought he could get away with it. Again, culture.
I get it, I’m a boss. I have to give ppl poop and say no a lot. I have to be the bad guy for the sake of the company. I feel like Dubas wasn’t this, and if he was they didn’t respect him because he’s young and inexperienced, and the fleeced him on their contracts. - Arctic_AARDVARK
Concerning dubas, ya he got tossed cause he (frank)ed around and found out ...but
I also feel that he was ready to make a move om the core 4 and shanny didnt want that yet.
I feel like a willie for karlsson (plus pieces) was probably going to occur.
Or maybe a Marner for karlsson plus.
Just a feeling though |

I agree.
No one knows for sure just how much Shanny has his fingers in the pie. I think he’s feeling the pressure now being on his 3rd GM. If they flunk out in the 1st round again, he’s gotta go.
Maybe it would be better if they missed this year? Really let them get smacked in the face. Everyone gets fired except for maybe Tre. Didn’t Tampa miss then win the cup? |

You can’t say this for sure.
Maybe he could’ve got AAV somewhere else, but he became a much richer man signing that contract with the Leafs. Only 4 years, massive endorsement deals, biggest market in hockey.
I would’ve given it to him too.
Mitch I’d go 12.25 x 8
Willy 8.5 but he won’t take it.
Tavares 5x5 take it or leave it.

People need to stop looking at this like its a bad thing.
Its just how him and his agent are conducting deals.
Mcdavid signed 8 years, if he leaves he leaves 4 years before AM his free agency.
Just because you sign for less years doesn't make you more or less committed in the long run.
Again, fans don't have control so they get antsy and up in arms when they see the shorter term contract. |

Out of all rumoured teams the Red Wings are the 2nd worst team....he is going there to collect points, a pay check and to maybe get a shot at playoffs.
Its obvious what is more important to him and its money and opportunity to play. |

I don’t disagree with you.
I think it would be fun if players took even shorter deals, 1 year deals even.
Half year deals

He got a $1.6M raise after two Rocket Richards and becoming one of the best two way players in the game. He 1000% left money on the table. Great deal for the Leafs.

Another way of looking at it is he got 750k per year more than McDavid.
Over their careers McDavid is 1.49 ppg.
Matthews is 1.13 ppg.
I would say Matthews got about as much as he’s gonna get in TOR. Plus the contract is front loaded, so he’s really getting 16m, 14m, for the first couple years |

I dare say we have surely invested enough $ already in skilled forwards at the expense of other glaring weaknesses in this lineup.
Management plus the "big four" are getting exactly what they signed up for: a poopload of $ for themselves and mlse, along with a piecemeal roster.
And a segment of the fanbase just can't help themselves from lapping up the MLSE gravy train.
"Nice things" indeed, but ultimately....it's just the same poop, different season. - fifty__missions

Why not sign with Detroit? They’ve got the 3rd best point% and goal differential in the East. They’ve got $ to spend and he plays with Larkin and DeBrincat. |

Maybe Matthews is "giving" the Leafs organization 4 years to stop (frank)ing up. Maybe he sees the same writing on the wall some of us posters do.
I wouldn't wanted to waste my career playing for a team that always comes up short and won't fix the obvious.
Matthews is a smart kid, played in Europe making $ instead of any amateur team or league in North America, he would understand this team more than any one.
He could hate Keefe. He could know Shannahan has been the pupper master all these years. Matthews could know so much more than us.
I guess the point is, maybe the player knows more than the average HB poster about the inner workings of the Leafs and conducts himself accordingly.
This franchise could be (frank)ed internally and some of the players are giving it a shot at the same time milking it for every penny. RoR didn't like it. There have been a few others. Just sayin'. |

(frank) him and his loser female dog vagina. Ass hat Kane should have been rehabbing and prepping in Detroit since they're such a wonderful destination.
Of all the teams rumored only Detroit has a history of consistently missing the playoffs in the last 10 years. 18 game in or so isn't anything impressive.
I'll let you know how I really feel later. |

You aren't looking at the numbers properly.
First off contracts go by cap percentages, or else Mcdavid and Matthews would be getting paid 1M a season like stars did half a century ago.
Mcdavids cap hit is 13.8M prorated to next years cap compared to Matthews. And it would be projected to be 14.6M the season after.
By the time his contract is up, and he takes the same cap percentage as he did when he was 21(would be a massive discount) he would stand to have a cap hit at about 15.5M-16.5M.
And thats if he wanted to take a discount, if he wanted to take a team to the cleaners he could go to 18M AAV.
So yes, Matthews took a discount...but you need to as long as NHL GMs overpay below average players. |

I love how when all the other NHL stars take less it’s because they had to, but when it’s the Leafs everybody’s like, “well, they had to pay them that because this reason or that reason.”
That’s such total bullpoop lol.
