Maybe Zach Hyman isn't as overpaid as we thought.

And yes, I said "we", because I also thought it was the right move at the time.

- Scabeh

If you can afford to give Tyler Bertuzzi $5.5m, you can afford to give Zack Hyman $5.5m - Hyman brings more to the table. The problem is the space we had available at that time. One of the things that Hyman has done consistently is improve any line in the top-9 by being on it, and Edmonton is no exception. The challenge with his contract is that he'll be 35 when it ends and those last couple of years will be harder for him given the bumps, bruises and battles.

At some point though you have to concede that we'd have been better off with Hyman - even paying him until he was 35 and having a couple of rough years - than we have been while we were unable to replicate him.

The other thing to keep in mind is that having McDavid as a line mate does sort of help. More than half of his 5v5 points are accumulated with McDavid; he works extremely effectively with McDavid & RNH as line mates. That line is fantastic.

I give Treliving all the credit in the world on the Bertuzzi signing.

He knew he was going to be a horrifically overpaid bust who contributed little to the Leafs, so he only gave him a 1-year contract.

That's 4D Mousetrap right there!

Hyman has proven to be a great grinder/worker for top tier players. Really embodying the "nice guy" version of an Anson Carter or Alex Burrows. Great success story, wish he was still a Leaf even with that contract. I doubt he would be putting up such gaudy point/goal totals, but he would likely still be a 25-30g 50-60p guy with Matthews/Marner/Nylander/Tavares in whatever rotation they put him in.

This. Imagine Bertuzzi on a line with McDavid or Drai?

The entire Leafs team has been an inconsistent mess this season. Bertuzzi finally seems to be settling in and doing the things we all expected him to do.

The points will start to accumulate.

I don't know, playing with Matthews/Marner doesn't sound so bad.

At the time we simply couldnt afford to pay Bertuzzi or hyman 5.5.
Also had hyman been an FA this past season, his agent probably would have wanted more han 5.5m
Ill give bert at least half a season to settle in.

I'm sure he'll be fine.

And hey, the Klingberg mistake magically went away so the Leafs can actually improve their defense this time.

Sure and you can check out his stats from when he actually played with those two. There's a marked difference.

Oh I thought the plan was the put him, a physical player with talent, along with these 2 for most of the season.

I guess he ended up playing with others? I haven't watched that many Leafs games these past few weeks.
