Yeah but I think Ohtani will become less popular after awhile, and the Leafs quest to finally win a cup will become the dominant story pretty soon.

At the end of the day Toronto can’t be considered a legit sports town until the Leafs win a cup.

Not even remotely similar situations. Kawhi Leonard was always rental. He was a great pick up by the Raptors. Ohtani has won two straight unanimous MVP's. There is no comparible in any sport. This is a lifetime contract no matter where he signs, not a mid season rental of an great player.

Is he better than Gretzky? Lemieux? Orr? Crosby? Howe? Hard to say. There is only one comparable to Ohtani - Babe Ruth. Think about that for a minute. Ruth was born in 1895 and died in 1946. It's way more than sexy news, hockey may be the favorite sport of many Torontonians that's no reason to minimalize this. You should have seen the lineups to get Bautista bobbleheads this past summer. 3-4 hours of massive lineups. How many Leaf highlights are as well known as that bat flip?

Howe is a tough one to place in this group. He played a different style in a different era. McDavid's skillset is posssibly on par with or better than some I ranked above him, but he doesn't have Cups yet, which tilts the decision towards Crosby, etc.

And mcd is a step or two above matthews...were as ohtani is several steps above any player on the jays...or really anything Toronto has ever seen in terms of star status.
